Jebus.....what now? Techs and Guru's....I have a ?

Hey guys, its Bob and Im back with another problem.
Ive had a string of problems with my teg. Now Im stuck again and I need your help…again. My baby is a 90/GS/5peed/172k and she’s Black
Within this year Ive replaced the clutch, distributor(seized bearing), cap/rotor,wires,plugs, and batt. Also the alternator about a year ago.
Now the situation. For a few days my starter, I thought, was giving me problems. This lead to alot of pushing my car around. Then I took a look, messed around with my negative cable, and heard the starter and electronics clicking on and off…Aha !! Thought I had it figured out, just have to replace my batt. cables.
So I moved the neg. cable around just right and she started right up. That night she was running fine, the entire 30 minutes I drove her. After leaving a friends house later in the evening. I jumped into my teg, she fires right up, and off I go. Get to the top of a hill and the engine kills but radio, lights etc…remain fine. So I pull her over, check the cables and nope, this time its not just the cables:(
So I try push starting her to see if I can do something, even roll her back down the hill and I get nothing the whole way. So I parked her and came back the next day. Get back in and she turns over but wont fire up. Then after a few minutes she starts up for a couple seconds and then dies off again. Sometimes longer, sometimes shorter, and sometimes not at all.
Im thinking Fuel related, Im on a full tank, engine bay smells like gas after cranking it over for a while ( 30-60 sec. of trying). I searched and seen Main Fuel Relay, but thats heat related, correct? And she died at night. Maybe fuel filter, or pump?
Id rather not take her to the local honda dealer, chargin $50 just to diagnose it for me !! And I figure you guys and guru’s would know whats up, I hope. So if you have expirience in this department, or can help plz let me know.
Sorry for the short story…thnx for reading. And thnx ahead of time for any ideas and help.

have you checked the ignition coil?

I would think coil or igniter as well.

Main fuel relay isn’t always heat related, but if you smell gas after cranking, I’d say your fuel pump is workin, so that crosses out the relay…

Get your car home and use a multimeter to test the coil and igniter – details can be found on this forum if you do a search i think, or go to the helms manual online (the URL for that can also be found in a search)

Hmmmm

Well as far as the coil and ignitor are concerned, I replaced the whole distributor this spring. Do you think it could be faulty already? I hope not. I think Im going to replace the fuel filter and MFR. Sound like a decent place to start? Oh, and I dont own a multimeter :frowning:

if you can hear the fuel pump “hiss” when you turn the key to the run position, your MFR is good… Another indication of a good MFR is the check engine light going off couple seconds after turning the key ON.

When the dist. was replaced, were all the internals replaced as well?

To answer Anwer’s question…went the distributor was replace, the whole thing was replaced. As far as the fuel pump goes…no noise…
This was the senario today. 12 o’clock noon, went to check if she started. Temp was Hot and thats for sure. Turned the key, no fuel pump hiss, bummer, and she just cranks over but no combustion. Sooooo…
10p.m. I try to start her when its a bit cooler outside, and what do ya know, she purs like a little kitty. Buzzed around the block a bit, just fine. Only died once, when I was backing out of the drive way.
So guys, I think its my f**kin MFR. Correct me if wrong but that sounds like the culprit. Tomarrow if I get some time, I’ll pick one up. Anyone know were to get one? I know the dealer has one, but its highway robbery. Have an idea of how much this is ganna cost me? I still need to replace my CV joints and brakes.
But I love my car…and the little bit of driving I got in today was kick ass. She’s a keeper/moneypit.
Funny how you dont know what ya got until its gone/sleeping.
Guess Grandpa was right.
Oh and to the fellaz that are helpin me through this THANK YOU.
Nobody else will.

sound like exactely the same problem I had before replacing my MFR… Replace it, it’s real easy! BTW, I bought mine at the dealer and paid about $60 plus tax, canadian money. Saw them on the web for like US$38…
