i personally have mixed opinions on the flip out head units…
I originally bought mine for the ease of searching through MP3’s and mainly for show.
After looking through all the various headunits made, very few offer a detachable face, which in my opinion is a must- if your going to shell out 500+ on a radio at least get one that will deter thiefs.
I bought a new blaupunkt ivdm7002 flip out for 649.00 from sonicelectronix.com about 3years ago which isnt too bad.(now its advertised for 559.00) From what i could remember shipping was fairly quick, however with most online products off sketchy websites- the warrenty will be voided unless bought from an authorized dealer (found that out the hardway)
the quality of the screen is good, and it does play mp3 cd’s dvds ect. It has alot of options such as EQ’s, soundstage, gains, and an input for a center channel, and the ability to upload background wallpaper pictures which is pretty cool i guess.
On the other hand; the sound quality isnt the best. it only puts out 17x4rms so id suggest maybe an amp for the internal speakers. the large obnoxious remote, which you need to scroll through the mp3 titles is a tad too bulky for my liking- its the same size as my optimum TV cable box remote. also the headunit has a brain which needs to be seperatly mounted, i put mine under the passenger seat and it fits fine, its just something you have to concider.
As for mounting the unit, as well as anyother flipout unit id imagine, it is going to have to stick out a little for the screen to completely clear. My first install job i had the flip out resting on the dash which eventually caused the motor to break from stress of it being slammed around on my dash when i hit bumps. (midwest electronics charged me 170 for the fix) Also now my volume button is a little broke causing the radio to lower itself randomly. (midwest quoted me for under 100 to fix)
IMO, all in all, if your looking for a cheaper flipout unit i’d highly concider this one. Several people i know experience issues with the volume knob on jensen radios months after getting theirs, i had mine for 3years and except for my first sloppy install job the volume button is technically my first issue. Also the jensen/dual units dont put out much more power if anymore power then this one.
basically what it comes down to is: if you want an awesome sounding headunit i’d stay away from flipouts… otherwise if thats not a huge goal, id concider this one over the jensen/phase liner/dual. and over the cheaper alpine/pioneer ones.
hopefully i gave some insight.
ill try and post better pics later this week.
