Okay, about two weeks ago, I was on the highway, getting off a sharp curvy exit ramp. As I proceeded around the turn, I heard this rubbing/knocking noise, but only as I accelerated in the turn. As soon as I backed off the pedal, it stopped. Well, a couple days later, the driver’s side CV Joint started clicking in turns, in addition to this other noise that only occurs while accelerating in a curve. Both are coming from the driver’s side front axle. None of the boots are ripped on the CV Joint. I had my coil-overs put in a couple months ago, but I didn’t have the money for the after market struts, so my stock ones blew rather quickly. While installing the coil-overs, my CV Joint popped out and the boot came out, but we added more grease and put the band back in place. I am assuming that the clicking is coming from the CV Joint, but I am not sure if the rubbing/knocking noise is also coming from that. Has this happened to anyone else, or is there anyway I can find out what it is easily. I was thinking maybe tie-rod or ball-joint, but I’m not sure how to check those. My Haynes manual makes a reference to something like a damaged strut mount or something like that also. Any help would be appreciated. My baby is just sitting there, because I am afraid to drive it and damage it more, plus it doesn’t handle very well since this problem started. Both me and my baby would appreciate any advice/tips. Oh, it is a 91 ls hatch. Thanks.
yep that’d be your cv joint, just get that replaced with a new/rebuilt one and you’ll be fine. the rubbing/knocking noise, how low is the car dropped? if its hella slammed, it could be fron the tire rubbing on the inside of the fender.
I don’t think it’s the wheel rubbing, cuz it only started after the cv joint started clicking, but I guess it is a possibility. I am really hoping that that is all it is, since it’s fairly simple to do, and not too expensive. I’m gonna go to my friends garage tonight to check it out, mine isn’t heated. Yeah, it is pretty slammed, I’d say it’s about a 3" drop in the front. maybe 2 1/2 in the rear (it settled kinda funny. Well, thanks, if anyone else has any ideas, please let me know.
If I were you, I’d check out the wheel bearings too… my friend’s 91 LS had a noise like what you’re describing due to his rear wheel bearings in hard cornering (and sometimes not-so-hard cornering).
And if your car is dropped about 3" without a camber correction kit, it COULD be hard on the bearings… just an idea…
Well, me and a friend checked it out tonight, and the cv joint is definitely toasted, due to insufficient amount of grease in the boot, (guess we didn’t add enough) also wheel bearings on both sides in the front are on their way out, and my driver’s side tie-rod is gonna need replacing too. Wish it was just the cv joint, oh well, it would’ve all had to of been replaced sooner or later anyways. Anyone have any idea how much the bearings are gonna run me? Thanks for the help.
Not SURE on these prices… though I replaced my Tie Rod End from Acura recently and I think it was $70 CDN ($40-45 US).
My friend’s rear wheel bearing I THINK was around the same price as a rebuilt axle, but I’m not sure if the front wheel bearings would be priced the same or not… I’d guess about $60-70 US.
Thanks. Do you know anywhere online that might carry them? I was thinking it might give me a pretty good idea.
