Key reminder Beep Question

Quick question is the key reminder supposed to beep when you open the door even if the engine is running? Would you prefer if it did not? It seems obvious to me that you are forgetting your key if the engine is still running. Perhaps it is a safety feature, because you might not realize the door is ajar.

I’m almost certain that once the key is set to “ON” (and thus, after “START”) that the circuit of that reminder beep is off. It sounds when in ACC.

Can someone confirm that? I need a definitive answer.

I’ll go check it out again when I’m on lunch

Is it based on the fact that the engine is running or just that the key is in the run position? If someone opens the door while driving down the road no beeping? Key in the run position but engine off, if you open the door does it give you the key warning? Seems like it should still give you a key warning, because the key is still there. Engine running, door open, does it give you a key warning?

In car right now.

It is only audible when the key is in position 1 and door is open.

Position 2: all power is on. No reminder beep regardless of engine status or door status.

Position 3: momentary start, then falls to position 2.

Thanks

Based on your answer, I was thinking about a minor change to the way my ICU handles the Key Warning. It currently sounds the key warning whenever the key is in AND the door is open with NO exceptions. That does not match the OEM behavior that you described. I think a more appropriate behavior would be to only sound the key warning if the key is in AND the door is open AND the engine is off. My thinking is that it is obvious that your key is in the ignition if the engine is running so the key warning is not necessary in that situation. If your engine is not running but the key is in the run position and the ICU doesn’t provide a key warning when you open the door you could be unaware that the key is in the ignition so a key warning would be appropriate under those conditions.

What do you think?

If I can summarize it:

OEM ICU:

KP-1, Door open, reminder chime
KP-2, Door open, no reminder chime

GEOMETRY ICU:

KP-1, Door open, reminder chime
KP-2, Door open, reminder chime

NOTE: KP = Key position; KP-3 = engine start (momentary, reverts to KP-2)

I say “NO” on the reminder chime for KP-2 with the door open. I like to have the radio on when I’m cleaning the car, and the doors will be open. I don’t want to hear the chime all the time. So, I prefer how the OEM one operates.

If it’s also on while the engine is running – yeah I think that’s unnecessary.

Since I can’t match the OEM behavior. I’m thinking that you will like it better after this change than you would have liked it otherwise. You can still silence the Key warning with the Key Reminder Mute option. That enables you to have the key in KP-1 (or KP-2) and not hear the key reminder.
