koni yellow & skunk2 coilovers question

I just picked up Koni Yellows to pair with my Skunk2 coilovers. From what I’ve been reading in the search’s, I read that you need a ring adapter. I’m confused as to why i need this ring. Do I cut the bump stop in half?

Thanks!!!

anyone?

Konis dont have welded on perches. they have perches that sit on a little snap ring. And, like, I dont think you can use the slide on perches with the slide on coilovers (I dunno why, but people have tole me that. maybe cause its too much slide on stuff :)).

I had skunks and when I got konis I ended up buying ground control sleeves made for konis (they have a alum piece that sits on the snap ring).

You got a pic of this ring adapter? Cause if it has nothing to do with what i was just babbling about then you can disregard what I said.

Ben

This is what came with the shock.

This the adapter that I keep hearing about…

Do I need the adapter for skunk2 coilovers?

yeah, look at it. The sleeve wont sit with even pressure with the stock perches.

Ben

only reason I’ve ever seeen for that adapter is so that the sleeve of the coilover sits flat.
lowering springs (and stock springs) aren’t flat on the bottom. Where as the sleeve of the coilover is.
Running coilover sleeves on stock shocks you have the same type of perch as the Koni’s without the adapter so it’ll be about the same. I can see how having the adapter would be better…but not absoulutly necessary.

where can i pick up this adapter? and will it work with ground controls?
is it possible to just install it without it?

I just happen to have my koni yellows with skunk2 coilovers sitting on my floor next to me right now after a nice bath. Looking brand new…

You will need that ring. I got my koni’s new and they came with it so I didnt have to go through the hassle of trying to find one.
You should be able to order one from koni directly.

Give Lee a call. He works for koni, and can help you out with any questions of ordering the adapter. I can’t find his number but you can contact him at honda-tech.

I have Skunk2s and Tokico Adjustables. My buddy was telling me that Konis and GCs with extended top hats will allow me to go lower with a better ride.

I was wondering why I cant go with Konis, top hats, and my skunk2s, and upgrade to GCs later. This thread seems to imply that I can do that. Also what would be the advantage of going with GCs instead of SKunk2s in this combo?

Also, you guys in really low DAs, any problems with the Revo UCA camber kits hitting the fenders?

Thanks.

I can’t visualize how a camber kit would hit the fenders. The wheel maybe, but not the camber kit itself.

The Revo camber kit is an upper control arm, I guess I should have spelled out Upper control arm instead of UCA, sorry guys.

Also I meant the inner fender, not the actual fender, figured that was a given though.

I dont have a solid answer for you on the koni/skunk combo (although thats what I’m running on my setup, just without the hats) but I can tell you that I know of some members that have had camber kit problems with their upper fender wells. If you do come across that problem then you can take a holesaw and drill out the areas where it is contacting on the fenders. The kit wont travel far enough up to hit the hood after drilling. I know for a fact that Shea (Shenrie on the boards) had to do that to his 4 door DA when he slammed it. I also auto crosses the crap out of it and never had a problem.

wow! BR!! haven’t seen you around in ages!

It depends on how low you are and how much camber you’re running. The more neg camber the less clearance issues you’re going to have. I was dropped about 3.5" previously running between -1 and -2 deg of camber. The uca hit the inner fender/strut tower but it made its own little dent and clearance was OK after that. No need to cut things up.

I know Shenrie cut his, but I’m still skeptical as to how good of an idea it is.

I’m pretty sure there are adapters for the Koni’s which let you run standard slip-on coilovers. I’m not sure if its a Koni part or a GC part. GC makes coilovers specifically for the Konis (smaller dia threaded collar) but they also make larger dia collars for other shocks.

If all goes as planned I’m going to be running Koni RACE shocks and 700/600 Koni specific GC’s soon…

Yeah, I lurk around here and there…

So Aside from the control arms, would this suspension setup allow me to go lower with more travel than the adjustable tokicos?

technically, yes, since the Koni’s have 3 circlip grooves, one of which is slightly lower than stock. this means you can put the perch which the collar sits on slightly lower.

However in the real world this may not mean anything. Since you would have coilovers on either the Koni’s or the Illuminas you already have a height adjustment feature. With the coilovers lowered ALL the way down you may already be at the limits of your suspension with the Illuminas and thus lowering the perch (using the konis) wouldn’t do anything except mean you wouldn’t be using the spring at all, you’d just be bottomed out all the time.
