Is any one using a larger oil filter in the stock location?
I am presently using a filter for an 88 Mitsubishi Montero, Purolator part number L10193 fits fine no leaks and has about twice the capacity of the standard Honda filter.
I can only vouch for Honda’s ‘HAMP’ filters. They filter amaaaaazingly well, and Honda actually recommends using them twice(2 oil changes) before ditching them. The cost is steep at $12-$15, but worth every penny. They are stock size.

What are the benefits of the different filters?

I was thinking the same thing?
Also, while we are on the subject, Marc, (or anyone else) are you using an aftermarket oil cooler? I am building an engine, and was wondering if I should add an oil cooler or not. I PLAN on doing some autocrossing. Thanks
I don’t totally understand the concept behind the HAMPs but I know its just a matter of filtering the oil,and then having some kind of a magnet net that keeps it contained. Again, its all more info then I need. I just know “they work good n’ stuff”

The HAMP filter sounds like a good idea right after a rebuild. Didn’t even know they existed. Thanks .J.
There’s a ton of reviews and articles online with comparisons of most of the major filter brands available like this one:

agent87 and I have spent quite a bit of time looking into this. And FYI, there’s a guy on honda-tech with a pissload of the HAMPs… $6 a pop. About half the regular price.
I’m using a WIX Ford Mustang (51515) oil filter. It’s not in the stock location but it is much larger than stock.

Bigger is better??
I don’t understand the reasoning to use a larger oil filter??
The main reason I use a larger oil filter is for more capacity. More capacity = cooler oil which I a big problem for me. If I’m on the boost for a long time the oil temp will get up to 260+ I’m trying to figure out how to cram a cooler in but I’m very short on space. Any sugestions?
Hmmmmmm i’ve never heard anyone using larger oil filters before. Would cooling be the only advantage? I’ve always heard people using smaller ones to have a higher oil pressure.
bump. I noticed Marc never replied on this one explaining what the advantages of larger oil filters are.
Hey teg92,
Larger filter, likely larger surface area to filter the oil which yields cleaner oil longer. And the ability to carry a larger amount of oil, more oil yields better cooling, slower rate of contamination.
Awesomse!
Do any other filters fit other than the '88 Montero?
Purolator part number L10193, STP 3950, Mobil 1 M1-105
so what about the oil coolers? Anyone have one? I’m going to put on in my car when I put the new b20 engine in it. I don’t really think I need it, but safer the better. Do it right the first time you know. And I will replace the filter with a larger more common filter (thats usually cheaper). I read some post awhile ago on a different board, and they did some dyno test and actually showed about a 2-6hp gain.
Wouldn’t a larger filter decrease oil pressure?
Anyone have any problems with leaks though? That woud be my main concern, as I commute a fair distance to school every day. I’m changing my oil tomorrow, and am thinking about a larger filter.
