Lift Support / Hatch Shocks

Ok, so like most other teg’s my hatch shocks are blown… ( the gas leaks out )
… so i went up to O’Rileys and bought new support’s for 21.99$ each.
i got home and took off the stock one’s easily of course… but i noticed that the clips on the one i bought are totally different… they’re plastic and resemble nothing to the stock ones… i dont even know how they hook up… They’re part number a9551 at O’Rileys…
any help would be appreciated im getting so pissed…

i dont trust orelly or autozone for oem parts, its better if u return those and try to find a teg at the local junk yard for oem ones since they came with the car and they are like 10 dollars for both, u need to find one that is stiff. mine went out when i bought the car, went to the junk yard and replaced them from there and no problems as of yet for like 3 months now.

actually we need to find a good OEM style replacement company for the shocks.

I had a pair that worked half the time, then I threw on a GS spoiler and they didn’t want to support the added weight. So a buddy was parting out his 90 LS and his shocks worked good for a spoilerless car, well they didn’t want to support my hatch.

Does anybody know of a good company that sells them that will work like they are supposed to? Junkyard parts are prone to fail so we need new parts.

what i do is clamp a pair of vise grips on them, that holds her open :ghetto:

I bought a set of auto zone shocks for my hatch, and the mounts where a lil bit different. but everything i need came with the shocks, i just had to remove the upper mount(chasis) and replace them with the ball mounts that came w the struts.

Havent had one problem with them yet.

How much did they run you? And do you have a part #?

I also ran a search on here and found Pylon Lift Locks. $9 at Amazon but there really isn’t much information about em.

Ya, they ended up working though.
I don’t have the part number on me as we speak but it came out pretty easy.

They give you an extra set of hardware, you have to first remove your stock hatch supports and there will be left the hardware still inside of the hatch.

Theres two bolts that hold the stock one’s in place that you have to take out and replace with the new hardware so the new hatch shocks will sit in place.

they’re pretty nice now, i just pull the hatch release thing and the hatch goes up on it’s own and stays in place pretty firm.

my old shocks were blown, but after i took out the rear windsheild wiper out the old hatch supports could almost support the hatch on there own.

[ for future reference ]

I was speaking to BLKAC1 there Erikkk but thanks for the info too. I was worried that a wrong part # would result in a shock that would fit, but not support the weight. $44 total…

you know i dont exatly remember. i want to say in the range of $10- 15 a piece… i dont know the part number.

i just went to the local checkers auto parts with the blown strut and sized it up with the new one to make sure they where the same

My old OEM ones gave up today. I bought some non oem from NAPA. They come up fine but its very hard to push them down. The dealer wants 140.00 a set. Thats just too much for my budget. Hard to find in the junkyard.

Does anyone know any good hatch struts that work like the OEM ones. Any places like autozone, kragen, or pepboys have them?

My 2 cents on this:

I replaced my worn/stock struts with ones from Canadian Tire (the Canadian equivalent of Pep Boys, Autozone etc.) They were totally different in mounting etc. but work really well. They come with these springy metal locking clips that hold the strut in to place on the hatch. If you lose these, there’s nothing holding/locking the strut into place on the hatch so if you happen to knock them loose somehow, you’re in for a goose egg on yer melon. Any I’d imagine you Americans get the same type of aftermarket strut. Problem is that I lost a couple of the clips and can’t find them anywhere. My neighbour noticed that on the hatch of his truck’s cap it uses the same type of clip. A guy at work with a Ford Focus has the same clips on his hatch struts, so I’ll hit the junk yard look for the same type.
I think that company makes the clips for all types of applications. SPS or SPI or something out of Grand Rapids, MI. I have the info at home; I’m at work.

Hope that helps, sorry for the long post.

I stuck with OEM. I got a set for 120 dollars. Picking it up this friday.

Get a 2x4, write JDM on it and bam. Hatch support.

Gatdamn! That’s crazy money for some hatch shocks! You can get them at rockauto.com for about $30 for a pair.

ha ha, this is embarassing, but I actually DO use a piece of wood to support my hatch because my struts have completely lost their ability to keep the hatch up no matter what the temperature is. And I’m too cheap to go buy new struts.

My piece o’ wood is a nice 1x1x36-inch piece of norway pine. Natural finish. I was using a very cheap, thin yard stick for awhile, but it eventually snapped.

I went through three sets. One is from autozone. I had bad luck with them. All of them had a hard time bringing it back down. I mean you need both arms to pull it down.

It was worth the money buying OEM. They fit like a glove and works like when I bought the car brand new. I plan to keep it forever.
