ok yesterday i noticed when i was driving at night that when im at a light idling the light looks very dim, but once i hit the gas the lights get brighter. is their somethign wrong with my wiring or anything else? at idle my rpm is around 800-900. any advice is great! thanks!
mine does the same, i think a grounding kit might help, not sure though, havent tried yet
voltage regulator in the alternator.
A drop in current, [and voltage] output from alt. is normal, the question is, by how much.
Take your car to any batt./alt. shop and have them do a load check on the cars charging system, it will be free, [if not find another shop] and only takes a few min., the check will tell you if something is wrong with the system, or starting to go wrong.
Grounding has been mentioned, but before you go and spend money on some “grounding kit” check the existing grounds and the pos.(+) connections also.
The first obvious thing to check is the batt. pos.(+) and neg.(-) terminal connections, don’t just look at them, remove them, clean the terminal and the batt. posts.
Do the same with the batt. to chassis ground, remove clean and reconnect, it is under the batt. tray.
You will also need to do the same with the chassis to motor/transmission ground, fallow batt. to chassis ground to the engine ground.
On to the 12V+ side, remove clean and reconnect the alt. to under hood fuse box lead, [charge lead], both ends, make sure the main fuse(s) is/are screwed down snugly, to a clean surface.
If after doing the above you still have a problem and you have an amp connected to the batt., pull the fuse, if problem still there, go to the batt./alt. shop and have the system tested, no point in going and having a load check if your grounds or power connections are bad.:whisper:94
fcm thanks for the advice, i will be trying it out otmorrow when it gets a bit cooler! hopefully i can get all this stuff fixed soon or im selling my beater!
