Lights Dimming, Idle, and Other Problems

My symptoms are also getting worse by the day,
it started out with the battery light coming on and my idle goes from 1k to 2k
rpm when I come to a stop.also when I turn my fogs or turnsignal on my cd playercuts out for a couple seconds. And while all this is going on my interior and exterior lights are very dim even while driving around. last night after work my car would barely turn over and start drove 3 miles after work to the store when I came back out to start the car same thing barely started again and even noticed a lack of power.I checked the ground wires sanded them down and sprayed wd-40. That was before I went to work today.I,m thinking alternator? maybe new brushes? Your info would be appreciated

sounds bad. i’d definitely whip out a multimeter and start diagnosing each one, one by one by following the manual. you may find a myriad of problems, or find the root of it. just gotta put in the work and troubleshoot by following the manual.

before I go to work, I am going to chech the grounds. There are only 2 ground (battery to tranny and valve cover to chasis) or there are more?

yes tranny to chassis, valve cover to chassis, and one more, battery to chassis.

Mine go from Valve cover to chassis - Battery to Tranny - Battery to Chassis.

Is it good, or should put the ground from my tranny to chassis instead of my battery to chassis.

sorry you may be right, directly from tranny to battery and not tranny to chassis. it’s the same thing really, you just want a good, clean, short ground.

Well I took out my alternator last night , I chose to go ahead and take the brake master cylinder out to get the alternator out took about 2 hrs but its out.The brushes were very bad so I’m sure that was the problem. Anyhow
i got new brushes its just the brushes and not the assymbly,so I was wondering if anyone had ever solder them in before,or maybe using brass solder would be better just wondering need some helpful info thanks

When my alternator went out, I knew nothing until I found this thread!

I was able to pull my alternator, change the brushes and drive it just long enough for my head gasket to pop. I recall someone saying that it was difficult to solder the new brushes on so I bought the assembly for $21.

That’s what i had…a ground directly from my batt. to the tranny…and some people said it was not good and i should have one to the chassis to.

so i bought a new ground (4aws) that i put on my battery to the chassis (just under the batt. tray.)

And damn it, i still have some dimming  …
Maybe it’s time for me to change the brushes in my alternator…i’m still running with the original one

Anyone who is experiencing ANY kind of alternator-related electrical problems should fix it ASAP. I drove my car for a day and half with my alternator failing and I blew almost every external light bulb on the car.

It’s not fun when your driving on the highway at night and your headlights pop then smoke filters from behind your suddenly-unlit dashboard. Then you lean forward trying to read your speedo and notice that your engine is way overheated. Yup! My alternator did some damage before it went. I still have to figure out which wire burned up back there!

my problem is when i turn my lights on and then my idle is below 1 and the car starts to rumble. also the radio will turn off and on after driving for a bit. i got my battery and alternator checked and they said that it’s normal. and my grounds look fine. but i haven’t had a chance to check them.

how do you go about checking them, my dad has a volt meter but i don’t know how to use it to check grounds.

Ok G2IC fam I have a question and I hope it’s not a problem, Now when I turn on my parklights and push the foglight button should they be on because they don’t turn on unless I put on my headlights. The reason I asked this question is because I have seen alot of G2’s on G2IC pics with there parklights on headlights are off but the fog light is on, please let me know is this a regular thing for the 92 models only our do I have a problem can someone please let me know thanks I would greatly appreciate it.

my fog lights have never worked on any of my g2’s, looks good when the whole headlight strip actualy works :stuck_out_tongue: any reason why they wouldnt ?

with the fog light thing you have to rewire them. look into teg tips, and go under rewire fogs, that’ll fix what’s up

Thanks alot trkd_out I really appreciate it I will check out the teg tips.

Ok G2IC fam I have another question I want to add some brighter bulbs to my tail lights but I wanted to know what’s the highest voltage or watts for the bulb’s that I can install without blowing something back there becuase I think the OEM lights are too dull too me, so if anybody in the G2 fam knows please holla at me thanks.

Hey I only have one ground and it’z from the Valve cover to the Chasis as far as I can see I wanted to know where can I purchase ground cables or the #4 Guage wire so I can add a ground to the Battery-Chasis and Chasis-Tranny or Battery-Tranny thanks.

Rewiring Fogs

Now I have a problem if my defroster button does not turn on at all but I want to do the fog rewire would I have a problem since I have to splice the deffoger into the fog switch will it work or should I not even bother.

i dont know about the bulbs ^^^

but for the grounds, just go to the hardware store and cut some wire yourself and get some cheap little connectors and make all your own. i used some spare 4ga wire from an old stereo system i had in the garage, and paid maybe a dollar for a box of connections. just follow all the wires and replace them.

and for the defroster, you may have a problem with the ICU. do you have anything other than the defrost button causing problems like maybe the wipers not functioning properly or the turn signals? any other dash buttons out of wack??

G2sleeperstyle=Thanks for the wireguage info I will definently get the 4ga guage wire and as for the defroster you said it’s the ICU and yeah y INT. for the wipers doen’t work The INT. acts like I have the wipers on normally there is no delay at all with the INT. for the wipers so if it’s the ICU can I replace it myself and do I just ask for an ICU when I call up honda is there a part number or anything, i don’t mean to be asking so many questions but I just want to make sure I get it right if you know wht i mean thanks I appreciate the help.
