Little help, how to wire up electronic speed sensor.

I’m sure theres probably a write up around here somewhere but I couldn’t find anything after searching for a while. I’m planning on either using an EK or DC cluster here pretty soon, and wanted to know what’s all involved to make the E VSS work correctly. Could anyone just give me a crash course on what’s necessary as far as wiring it up, or link me to a good thread. The speed sensor plug is a 3 wire plug, so I’m assuming that 1 wire is for ground, 1 for power, and 1 for signal that either goes to the ecu or straight to the cluster. The harness plug I’m using for the VSS is off of a 94 LS, if anyone is familiar with wire colors and what wire goes where. Thanks in advance.

A quick glance at the 98 Helms says:
BLK=Ground
BLK/YEL = Battery Voltage
BLU/WHT = Signal. Pulse from 0-5V

And it looks like that signal is directly split and goes to the ECU and to the Speedometer although I would recommend double checking that.

So all you would have to do is run that signal wire into the cabin and T it into the existing wiring that is there for the stock system.

If you are curious, 1025 rpm of that sensor = 60mph on the gauge.

I can’t leave without saying that I think this is a really silly idea though.

Hey man, thanks for the reply. I did glance at my helms manual and assumed that I had to do something similar to what you suggested, however I wasn’t sure if the signal wire was simply a T into both the ecu and cluster, or if it went to the ecu, and from there the signal was sent to the cluster via a different wire off of the ecu and into the cabin harness. So I guess, I was looking for info from someone who has done this.

Honestly I kind of agree, the idea isn’t really practical. More or less an aesthetic I’d like to do to my project car, with the cluster swap. Also, I’m planning on running a hydro trans and an electronic speed sensor swap just seems like a fun project to go with those two things. Thanks for your help, I appreciate it.

As far as it being just a simple T connection, I’d be willing to bet that it is mainly based on the fact that if you look at the FSM that particular pin (the VSS signal) is labeled as an input on the ECU and, after recently and stupidly going through the entire cabin harness and pulling out all the ABS wiring, I can tell you that Honda is a fan of having one wire tap into another. They put like 2 layers of electrical tape over the connections though, so it is all cool…lol.

Lol, I like that last sentence. I have made a few ‘tuck’ harness’s, being that they are all the rage lately, and honda especially likes to do this for grounds in the EWH (not necessarily a horrible thing I suppose…), where 1 ground wire is used for several sensors/plugs, and tapped into them via T and secured with a couple of layers of electrical tape, as you said. It does appear to work however, so who am I to judge, I’m just an enthusiast who works on and prefers Hondas, I didn’t engineer and build them…lol.

I think that when the time comes, I’ll probably just try it as you have suggested because it seems to be the most likely way that it was designed to work. I was thinking about EK civics, which utilize a 1 piece engine harness as opposed to the the 2 piece shocktower plug design of DA’s. The EK civics have a green plug near the ecu that transfers the wiring and info from the engine harness to the under dash harness which would lead to the cluster (among other things). I was thinking that on this particular design, there may be a wire that would go directly from vss to the ecu (VSS signal wire), and then a seperate wire to this green plug connecting to the dash harness, and to the cluster. However, now that I think about it, there is still only one VSS pinout at the ecu which indicates a split/ T still, somewhere.

I’m still sort of surprised someone who has done this already with success hasn’t chimed in, but it’s probably because you pretty much answered my question and I’m over thinking it. Thanks for you help again.
