little problem anyone have an idea

this is a cool site!!! anyways im pretty much mecanically challenged so any hellp would be appreciated, well i just changed my oil myself for the first time a couple days ago i was pretty happy…well after i changed it put in the right amnount of oil 3.5 quarts and everything… and now everytime i drive it it seems to be losing oil… but i dont think it can be burning oil because i dont see any smoke( burning oil) when its running… i made sure the oil pan nut was tight… and the oil filter was put on hand tight… well i hate to keep buying oil and adding it everyday… mabye someone has some ideas what could be my problem… if not mabye ill just go get it professionally changed but i was hoping i wouldnt have to… thanks for any help

ps. it cant be leaking it because i dont see any on the drive way unless its leaking it when im driving it… well like i said im mechanically challenged. later

help!!! lol

i asked my friend and he said my piston rings might be clogged because i used some stuff with my oil called “engine restore”… but i dont think he has a clue because i always use this stuff and my car never used up thgis much oil before i have to add a whole quart a day :frowning:

with the engine cold, remove your spark plugs (one at a time so you don’t confuse the wires).
See if they’re wet with oil. They shouldn’t be.

  1. Don’t use Engine Restore. Notice the directions? Shake well before use. That means that there are particulates in the can that can plug up your oil screen, oil filter, etc.

  2. Have a friend ride behind you while you do some acceleration tests. This will truly tell if you’re burning or not.

  3. Thoroughly check your engine bay for leaks. My VW leaked oil, but it didn’t show it on the driveway. It collected on the crossmember, burned off on the block, etc.

did you make sure to remove the old filter gasket before you put the new one on?

dip stick is down, oil cap is tight?

how much oil are you losing and how often?

are you checking it while the engine is cold or hot?

thanks for the ideas

anyways i checked everything you guys said but i think it could be burning oil at high rpm…cuz i tend to run it hard… well the car is at 165,000 miles so burning alittle bit isnt bad… still runs great though… acura rules!!! thanks for the help…

oh yea 1 more thing while im at it, my engine kinda makes a clicking sound when its running… any idea how to fix it or what it is ?

I’d advise for you to not run the engine hard if you’re burning oil. If you say you’re burning at high rpm, then obviously things like the piston rings, valve guides, etc. are the first things to leak. Obviously, stay away from WOT accelerations. Basically, just take it easy. Shift around 3-4k rpm at the most. This is of course, if you want the engine to last a bit longer until you decide to either swap it or rebuild it.

You should also test for oil consumption while driving in relatively low rpms (between 2000-3500 rpm).
