Long build in process.

I don’t think the fitment on those skirts is out of the ordinary. Everyone I’ve talked to has had to do extensive fitting to get them right. Apparently the original Mugen’s are much much better, but still require some work. I’m dreading fitting mine (I’ve had bnib replicas sitting in my closet for 3yrs).

What tools are you using to do the trimming?

Awesome work as always!

As far as tools, mainly:

90° angle grinder with round 36grit disc
3M flat sanding block with 80grit and 180grit
80 and 180grit by hand
And then just a ruler and marker to mark what needs to be trimmed

Thanks fellas!

I was figuring angle grinder would be the way to go. I just got a larger compressor for my garage so when the time comes I’ll probably pick up a cheap pneumatic one. Thanks!

A Harbor Freight cheapie works great. We’ve had the same one at the shop for nearly four years now… And we use the shit out of it.

That’s great to know! I actually just bought an $8 3" cut-off tool from them, I needed it for a tool box hybridization project I was doing. Figured that for $8 it was worth it even if it only worked for this one project. Worked flawlessly so far! I’ve been buying a LOT of stuff at HF recently

No real updates… I’ve been keeping busy with work and simply plugging along. After an 8hr day, and this heat, the last thing I’ve wanted is to drive in 90F+ weather with no AC…

We finally had a slight break in the weather, so I did take the opportunity to stretch its legs… naturally I had to snap a couple shots.

After a quick bite to eat:

And sunset by the shore of the Great Salt Lake:

This is the first time I’ve actually given the hood bra a chance. I do enjoy having it, simply to switch things up and give it a different look… But with the likelihood of scratches, it won’t see much actual road time.

Looks great buddy!

Man at any angle with any accessory she pulls at the heartstrings. I am happy to see you are enjoying her and taking it out. More random pics!

Entirely too kind… it really isn’t anything spectacular… but since you asked, rand0m pix0rz!

There ya go!

I really need to do some panel-aligning… there are some gaps that aren’t quite 100% and it drives me nuts. Not to mention the ride height… But that should be the next big mod. I plan to redo the suspension… coils, bushings, bearings etc etc.

Thanks for the comments, as always!

I was just rereading a bunch of your thread looking at your engine/tuning stuff since you pointed out that our engine builds were similar. I guess the heads are pretty similar, but your block pretty much puts mine to shame… Haha. I also watched the dyno video you had posted and it’s definitely impressive! Love your teg man!

You still need a type r throttle cable bracket for the IM? I have one that I’d be down to donate to your build. Brand new in OEM packaging. Just let me know if you want it and I’ll send it your way.

^ That’s why I love this site. Still some great people here!

btw, Sean, looks way cleaner w/o the bra  But I guess that’s just the old man in me not understanding all the hype behind those things. I vote you sell that thing while they’re still valuable. Sooner or later I imagine the fad will run it’s course and they’ll be a dime a dozen like they used to be. Car looks great, especially lovin’ how bright the blue is on your wheels when the sun hits 'em right. What lugs are those, they look a little darker than the Rays blue which is what I’d like to run when I finally paint mine mag blue. My old Rays lugs are sun faded and worn out so I just had 'em anodized black with some stuff my friend had done. Still haven’t seen how they turned out though. And I need to find a way to get mag blue paint matched, just having a hell of a time figuring out how since I don’t have anything to bring to the paint shop.

Thanks for the compliments man! As far as the throttle bracket, I don’t want to take it off your hands if you plan to use it at all. But if you decide you don’t need it and chose to part with it, I’ll definitely kick you some cash to at least compensate you for shipping. I hate taking advantage of people so, yeah… Thank you for the offer!

Indeed Colin! Great people here still, it is a breath of fresh air. I kind of went off on a tangent last night on FB about the local ‘scene’… I’ll tag you just for kicks.

I’m so torn about the hood-bra. The front end almost looks plain to me… A front badge would cure this, surely. As well as a decent lip. But that will be down the road a bit. I detest what it will inevitably do to the finish of the hood also, so like I mentioned it really won’t see much road time. But a part of me does enjoy the look lol.

The wheels look awesome in direct sun! It’s so weird, there is a ton of red/purple in it. On curves and bends you really notice the change of color.

The lugs are… uhh… Rayz cough lugs. I picked them up from a budy of mine when I got the Retrack wheels. All I had were OEM lugs, so an aftermarket set was in order. I want the Mugen ones that ICB has for sale, but its not something can’t be immediately justified, financially. Considering the wheels are knock-off, we can’t verywell have genuine lugs now can we?!? But I do have to assure myself every time I drive the car by checking the torque on them lol.

Getting a mag-blue paint match without a sample is going to be extremely difficult, if not impossible. BUT, if you don’t have anything else on your car that is genuine mag-blue, you’d never notice if the paint match is a bit off… Unless you park next to a genuine mag-blue set of wheels heh.

Thanks again for all the love! I know it’s not a perfect car but it still has a place in my heart. It does make me happy, even though sometimes I want to drive it off a cliff lol

I definitely won’t be using it. I already have a brand new one on my manifold. This is an extra. I’d rather it go to a good home than collect dust…

I’m going to be shipping stuff out today so if you want to shoot me a text or email with your address in the next couple hours it’ll go out today and you’ll save me a trip to the post office later.

Emailed! Thanks again sir.

Are they Ray’s replicas or just random blue lugs? Earlier this year I bought some cheaper blue ones but they were too dark, I really liked the more teal color of the Rays I have now. Which I only have because they came with my wheels. Those things are so insanely priced it’d be hard to justify the cost. With that said the devil on my shoulder is telling me I’m going to need them to pull off the color scheme I want

I have a friend who I thought had mag blue CE’s, but apparently they were painted and are not original. That was my original plan till I found out they weren’t real. I have found a couple of powder coat colors which look to be close matches - at least close enough for me. The problem is I’ve only seen them online and I don’t want the wheels powder coated anyway, I want to paint them. So maybe if I can find a local powder coater who has that color and I can snag a color sample from them I can have it matched. It’s a stretch though.

They are replicas. My buddy works for an airline and goes to lots of places in Asia etc etc. So I’m quite sure that they not legit… unless there is a Ray’s Thailand lol.

Do you mind my asking why you prefer paint over powder for your wheels?

Yeah, I just meant if they were replicas of actual rays or if they were just other random blue ones that may be a different style or knock off of a different brand. I wouldn’t hesitate to run fakes so long as everything looks legit and they work the first few times. Really all you’d worry about is that the threads are good. Aluminum quality could be a concern I guess but it seems like most of the stuff coming out of Asia these days is pretty good, generally just the finishing that isn’t top notch.

As for paint vs powder…

  • I’ve heard it’s harder to find cracked wheels if they are powder coated
  • Paint is cheaper seeing as I’d be doing it myself vs paying someone to powder coat
  • I don’t want to be tied to the color and it’d be easier to strip paint than it would powder

Yeah I am always super careful when putting them on and taking them off… luckily it was a set of 20 so I have spares lol.

All valid reasons for painting a set of wheels man. I just hate the prep that goes into paint. So much easier to have them blasted. I’m lazy though!

They’re my track wheels, so they’ll get beat up regardless and most of the time will be covered in brake dust. Respraying them once or twice a season isn’t an issue if need be.
