I’m trying to figure out if the fog light is in a totally separate “compartment” from the main headlight. I had to install a pair of slim pusher fans for my turbo set up, but now with the fans installed, the back of headlight housings where the fog lights are, are interfering with the slim fans.
I modified a set of USDM headlights by cutting the entire fog light bracket off, but I’m not too crazy how the car looks without the fogs in place. I have a set of one pieces that I’m thinking of modifying to keep the front looking normal. I just don’t know what the inside of the one piece looks like.
No, the fog light is not it’s own compartment. The JDM lights consist of the front lens piece, the rear plastic housing, and then a bunch of bits that fit inside those two. Here are some pics I took last night:
You just cleaning those up to re-seal them, Colin? Fun stuff! I had to do that to mine due to a small water-leak and missing fog-capsules.
As far as the OP goes… There’s really no way to get rid of the fog-light section of the housing and re-seal it. Unless you’re a serious plastic-welder or fabricator, it wouldn’t be worth ruining a set of one pieces by attempting it. IMO, either rethink your fan setup, or leave the USDM setup in there and call it a day.
Sean, cliffnotes to an otherwise long story:
- wasn’t too stoked on my current lights, one looked dirty inside and it leaked
- picked up another set from a friend that looked cleaner but then noticed the locating pins for the corner lights were snapped
- decided maybe I should look into pulling them apart and using all the best pieces on my car then selling the other set, just wasn’t sure how successful I’d be pulling them apart
- turns out pulling them apart isn’t hard at all
- turns out my lights were in better condition than I thought, if I clean the inside, polish the outside, and seal them well I think they’ll be much better than the avg set you see for sale
- now I just need to see if I have the time to pull all 4 lights apart, refinish everything, keep the best set for myself and sell the other
Also trying to decide if I should remove the glare guards or not and what type of sealant to use. I don’t want to use a white/clear/black slippery silicon, hoping to find something more thick, gooey and gray to mimic the OEM sealant.

That’s the product most people use for resealing headlights after a projector retrofit.
Thanks for the tip, I’ll look into that.
Thanks for the pics Colin. Confirms that my plan isn’t going to work.
