Looking to buy 93 Teg....

I found a 1993 Acura Integra GS that’s in great shape overall with 124,000 miles on it. It’s a 5spd and has pretty much all the options for $4000.

The only thing wrong with it is the engine seems to make a abnormal (I think) knocking sound. It’s really tough to describe the sound, but it could just be normal for the 1.8…The knocking sound is hardly noticeable outside the car unless the hood is open and it can’t be heard from inside. It’s pretty rythmic and sometimes gets a little louder, but then goes back to it’s normal rythm. The RPM’s at idle are also at the normal 750 too. I think the sound is near the right side of the engine bay when looking from the front.

I am a newbie so I really don’t know enough about these engines to tell if this would be something that is normal or critical.

Any help would be deeply appreciated.

That sounds like alot of money for a car with that mileage.
That sound may be the valves they might need an adjustment or maybe a pulley.

I just bought my 91 teg w/115k miles a few months ago. It runs good, but I have had to fix a few things like the radiator, a few hoses, along with normal maitenance of a car w/lots of miles. I never had mine checked out first, and it cost me. You should have it checked first.

Yeah. I wasn’t really considering having it checked out until I took my Dad up to look at it and he steered me away after hearing the noise the engine makes. He’s proficient with domestic automobiles but not so inclined with imports. He just knew it didn’t sound normal and thought the sound was coming from deep inside the engine.

There was actually another Teg sitting right beside the one I was looking at. We started that one up and compared it to the engine sound on the one I was looking at and it didn’t make the noise. The only difference was that the other Teg was a GS-R so it had the 1.7Vtec.

:stuck_out_tongue: Deffinitely go for that one!!!

I probably would go for the GS-R, but it was starting to show some rust, the windshield would need replaced, has a hitch on it, has 180,000 or so miles on it, and still wants $4300 for it…pretty beat IMO.

you’re right

that ticking sound maybe the valves, on honda motors the valves are supposed to be adjusted every 15,000 miles. mine made a noise similiar to what you described, after taking it in for the 90000 mile maintenance at 79,000 miles, the noise went away. although i had valves adjusted, timing belt, water pump, belts… so i’m thinking it was the valves. i’m actually thinking of selling mine at around $4000 or so. its in excellent condition, never driven hard and the body is great. but, its an auto…biggest flaw in the teg.
