I cleaned up the engine last spring to figure out where the oil leak was coming from. This spring I see the oil is only leaking below the head. Oil all around the pan. Just wanted your input as far as a confirmation of what I think it is. Hard job to change the head gasket? What else should be done at the same time?
Is that oil just above the top radiator hose too? Give the cam seal a clean and check it after a drive to see if its coming out of there… thats a common problem.
Also check your radiator for murky water which is another sign of a bad head gasket.
Let us know how you go
I’ve had cam seal and valve cover gasket leaks also but changed the plug and gasket a while ago. With fresh oil showing up, I cleaned it all up last spring and waited to see what showed up. All around the valve cover is dry. I will check the plug but pretty sure it is ok. It is really all along the seem of the head on the front of the engine and below. Nothing above. I’ll look tomorrow night after work just to be sure.
check the distributor seal too. i highly HIGHLY doubt it’s the head. clean it all off again thoroughly. bone dry. run it, then see where it starts. there are many common places in that area
Can a leak from an oil pan gasket travel upwards on the engine like that?
This. Head gasket leaks are uncommon yet leaky distributor o-rings and cam plugs are very common.
Only if your car is upside down. Oil will always drip downward.
Yeah its the cam plug. At least for sure some is from there I
ll need to clean it all up after I fix it and make sure there`s no other leak. It was sneaking out from the bottom and snaking down where I couldn’t see it.
Have you ever seen oil eat into painted surfaces? The lower sway bar has oil on it (since it leaked down everywhere) and the paint on it is bubbling away just like it would with paint remover. Never thought that oil would do that but I guess if it sits long enough it would saturate the paint and break it down. Makes sense?
I was worried at first that it was something stronger like power steering fluid, but the color doesn’t match and there’s no apparent leak from the rack.
check out the aftermarket for that plug. they use o rings to seal, and do a much better job. blox sells them for dirt cheap
Last night I bought generic Ebay 3 o-ring seal and a valve cover gasket kit with plug rings and grommets. That should fix this issue. Now you guys can focus on my other problem that I posted about the intermediate shaft bearing!
Thanks for the input.
