The other day I was driving up the street from work and I got caught in one of those roadside smog tests. I did not see it until I was up on it and stopped by the CHP directing traffic. He points me over to the side of the road and I realize that I am going to be screwed. As I am waiting, a guy from BAR comes up to me and explains that they are conducting a “random” survey of vehicles on the road to make sure that Smog Inspectors are doing their job. He tells me to step out of my car and wait off to the side of the road while they inspect my car. They pop my hood and look at the vacuum line diagram on the hood. They notice right away that the diagram is not right. This guy gets a flash light and checks the block code, “this is a 1.6 not a 1.8.” He then tells me, “did you know that you have a newer motor in your car?” I tell him, “I bought this car the way it is, what are you talking about?” He continues, “this motor doesnt go with this car.” I then tell him, “what are you talking about? What motor goes in this car?” “A 1.8, there is a 1.6 in here!” So I go back and forth with him about what I need to do and he tells me about the BAR sticker in the door jam and certification bs. After they run my car on the rollers, they get a printout like if I was to get it smogged. I talk to this other tech and asked about what I need to do about the motor and blah, blah, blah. I get the printout from him and ask him if I passed? He tells me that they are just conducting a survey, there is no pass or fail. I ask him if I would have passed or failed? He said that he didnt know. Then I tell him that I know that he smogs cars besides working at this check point. He tells me that I would have passed based on the year of my car and the numbers that I got. So what is the f*cking point then? Revenue for a Bankrupt California?? I later find out that you can refuse to have your car checked. The only thing is that if you refuse they still take down your information. Oh well, I am getting to old for this bullsh!t
smog check points? what is this world coming to? what part of Cali are u from?
You’ve never heard of that before? They’ve been doing that for awhile, although I’ve never seen it personally.
This is once again all the more reason to do legit swaps, it’s not like its difficult to get a BAR sticker. Really the only engines you can’t get a BAR sticker for would be a b20 or an ls/vtec.
reason #32987 not to live in california!
Holy shit, something like that would never happen here. Cops don’t care WHAT you do here.
Need a roommate??
UPDATE:I received my registration in the mail a week or two ago and there isnt a problem. Keep in mind that I didnt have to get it smogged this year. We will see in 2012!!!
Sure, they’ll put up checkpoints to see if your car is “green” but you can swim the Rio Grand from Mexico, drive drunk, work illegally, and they’ll look the other way.
F#%k California…

Amen to that. I now live in Nevada and drove to Folsom one day,a CHP pulled me over and tried to say my car was illegal in the state of Cali. He popped the hood and all but didn’t see my Cali bar sticker tell i pointed it out,his face turned red and he walked to his car and took off. My Grandmother was like WTF? lol.
