Lost A Quart of Oil...

Lost a quart of oil in about two months. I had my oil changed because my check oil light came on (in the spring), then it came on two months ago so I changed the oil. The teg’s only been driven 2700 km’s since and it’s lost a quart or more of oil (mom put in a quart yesterday because it was low). We use Mobil 1 5w 30 and the car has been driven atound town since the last oil change and is just about to rollover on 171,000 km’s.

Is this a normal oil consumption? It seems kind of weird because before the check oil light first came on it never used to eat oil at all?

So, let me get this straight, you lost 1 quart of oil in 2700kms? Can you confirm that for me, please. Apart from that, you must first eliminate any possibility that you are leaking before proceeding to other troubleshooting steps.

With the total amount of miles(km) the car has, the number of km the car has been driven since the oil change, and the oil viscosity used, I would say its no big deal. Try 10W-30. You’re supposed to use a thicker oil as the car gets older anyways.

Well, you know what oil looks like, don’t you  ? Anyway, from the top, look at your valve cover, cam seal, distributor o-ring, and see if there any oil residue on those areas. A check on the PCV valve would be prudent as well. From the bottom, check the oil pressure sending switch, oil filter, oil pan, and just generally inspect any type of oil buildup. If you’re not confident, take it to a reliable mechanic JUST for inspection (make sure you are present with him at all times).

just looking in the engine bay I noticed that there was something (could be oil deposits) just below the plasric looking cap (don’t know the name) that is on the left side and where the rad hose connects to the block. it is soft and black.

If you are referring to a black circular disk above the upper radiator hose, then that is your cam seal. Clean the oil deposit area, and then drive for about 15-20 minutes. Recheck the cam seal to see if it’s leaking again.

I’ll try to get some Simple Green tomorrow and see if the oil is coming out at the cam seal

This should help you:
