Need opinions. over the last couple days I have been getting a loud POP heard through the firewall when I start out in first gear. doesn’t happen consistently, and seems to be when I am a little heavier on the gas during takeoff. if I go easy no pop…
Last weekend I had degreased the underside of the transmission and engine as I have a oil leak to track down… this started happening shortly after.
aside from this pop the engine is running fine, throwing no codes, transmission shifts smoothly between all gears, nothing to indicate an issue. Clutch feels fine, CV axles & boots are intact. I’m baffled with this one, but at the same time concerned as the last thing I need right now is a costly repair or to be without a vehicle.
Answered my own question when I got home… motor mount driver side is completely shot out… the rest are dry rotting. i guess i know my weekend plans lol.
And dayum these things are not gonna be cheap to replace… might leave this to the mechanic since I don’t have a cherry picker to support the motor. oh the joys of a used old car…
I may do the inserts on the leftover parts, but given this is my daily driver… I dropped it at the shop and had em replaced. I couldn’t wait for parts to get here and be without a commuter car.
Thinking about getting the old parts and doing the inserts tho for later on when I get to doing a rebuild.
the sound has my mechanic baffled too. we talked about it for a good 20 minutes but couldn’t come up with anything… tightened up the subframe and anything loose under there found that the bracket that mounts between the exhaust and block was busted so removed that and it (the pop) is still there… sounds like something hitting the firewall… front and rear tranny mounts were ok as well
I’m going to put it up on blocks this weekend pull the wheels off and see if it is my suspension, or maybe a loose strut.
the pop is not just when putting it in gear… sometimes happens when I hit a bump, sometimes when turning… unfortunately it is only there while the vehicle is in motion lol… hard to isolate it when the car isn’t running
Found my issue today. The bracket that connects from the back of the transmission and goes up over the rear sub frame cross member had a couple loose 17mm bolts. Tightened those up and a couple bolts on the steering and no more rattling and popping. Ride quiet as it could be now
Next I need to ditch the cheap ebay coil overs the last owner had on there for some descent ones… they are starting to mushroom out at the bottom.
