lower-cost exhaust replacement. Flowmaster (audio included)

Forgot to upload the images. I painted the aluminum parts black. The muffler already came black. The silvery marks are from anti-sieze that was still on my fingers as I was installing it :stuck_out_tongue:

Muffler looks good, how is it holding up with the clamps? I still need to paint mine.

SO far so good. I was planning on tightening them this weekend.

One those clamps kept coming loose when I test fitting the exhaust, so my brother welded it up for me. Doesn’t look pretty but it’s sealed. And I have the peace of mind that the exhaust won’t fall apart on the road.

I wanted to use the supplied tip considering it alone is $50. But the dang spot welds on the clamp of the tip broke. So I ended up doing this.

I know it’s not everyone’s style but I like it.

Which exhaust system is this?

I believe it’s the same one you just put on. I’m just using a different tip.

Hm my muffler was black.

Anyway the tip resonator I got didn’t work. I neglected to understand how those worked and they need to be inserted into the muffler, not the just the tip. (Wow that sentence sounded wrong.)

So doing some more sleuthing, it turns out the 40 series mufflers from Flowmaster (which is in that 17280 system) is one of their louder mufflers. The 60/70 series are much more quiet. So I contacted Flowmaster to see if there’s a direct replacement muffler for that. I wish I was given the option to choose which muffler I wanted. :argh:

Just wanted to update. The exhaust resonates a bit too much for me on the inside, but it sounds nice on the outside at least. It’s also given me really good fuel economy. Compared to the albeit ā€œdestroyedā€ stock cat-back pipe and exhaust, I’m getting about 3 miles more per gallon, sometimes more.

Overall I’d recommend this setup for a budget stock exhaust replacement. I spray painted the piping so I hope it helps protect the system throughout the winter.

This thread has been helpful for reference… my 4-dr finally developed an axle back exhaust leak that wont let me pass inspection. So tonight i get to swap it out for the inexpensive Walker… but i fully expect it will be a temporary fix until I can get a better setup. On that note, any update on the Flowmaster setups?

I’m still using the same setup. I never purchased the quieter version. I guess I got used to it. I saw some rust appearing on the welds of muffler itself, so I painted on some more high temp paint a few months ago. Other than that, no issues. It hasn’t seen a winter since February 2017 though.

I installed a new Thrush muffler a few days ago. It is just a little louder than stock, which is actually nice. I got worn out by the drone at highway RPM during my daily commute. The clamps held well, and I’m still using the Flowmaster mandrel bent piping. No rust on the piping, but there was rust on the muffler. I’m satisfied with the build quality of the piping. I can only assume the muffler rusted (on top) because that’s where salt settled during when I was driving the car during winter / salt months.
