Lowering Srpings Vs Coilovers

i need to know wats the difference… i know coilovers give u shitty ride…
i if this is true… i would wanna get srpings… but i want to get the lowest possible drop… wat springs can i get.? neuspeed race has 2" all around…if not i will have to go coilovers… and wat coilovers can i get for a nice ride… i cant affourd teins thank you

You can’t afford Teins? Are you sure about that? http://www.prostreetonline.com/buy/tein_stech_lowering_springs/acura/

If you’re looking for a nice squishy Taxi-cab quality ride, those are your best bed. They lower the car 2’’ all around, the spring rates (what actually effects the ride quality) is softer than stock springs.

If you’re looking for something lower, but with whatever type of ride you’re looking for… you should look into Ground Controls. You can order them in any spring rate that you wish and since they’re coilovers, lower it even further than 2 inches.

About your myth with coilovers being the shittier riding types. The spring rates for coilovers are at the extended (non-lowered) height of the spring… just as regular springs are measured. So when you lower the car, you increase the spring rate because you’re decreasing the amount of travel the spring has to go before it rebounds back up. Imagine pushing in a small spring, the more you push it in (lower the car) the harder it gets (higher spring rate).

One thing to keep in mind is when you lower your car, you will NEED to purchase new struts that can handle the drop. If you drop your car say 2’’, you’re compressing your struts so much they can blow easily. Not to mention how shitty it will ride with mismatched struts. The harder a spring, the “harder” strut you will need to counter-act the spring and give you a neutral feeling suspension. This will lessen the chance of bouncing down the road, which looks really stupid and is dangerous to drive on when taking corners quickly.

With that in mind, some struts to look into are Tokico Illuminas… they aren’t known to be the highest performing strut, but they’re adjustable so you can soften or harden them. Since you’re on a budget, they should also meet your requirements. They will also allow you to drop to car further before having to worry about any damages.

My last teg had Coil overs… The brand was NONE, they were Ebay no name Coil overs… but i had KYB GR2 Shocks…

For the first month and a half of haveing the coil overs the ride was pretty decent, when going over a good sized bump on the freeway it would rebound (bounce) about 3 times, but for huge bumps on the freeway… you would bounce outta your seat… with a descently soft landing… I had fun bouncing around but some people in the back seat didnt… but after awhile the springs softened up and bounced about twice if not once and got surprisingly smoother…

Thats for the ride quality but setting the Coil Overs was a BITCH!!! id try raising it because i had it extremely to low, I mean it would spark on the freeway, But whenever id raise it, it would seem to never stop lowering its self. I myself wouldnt mind getting another set of Coil Overs for my new integra since i dont know what road conditions are going to be when i move.

Heres a picture of my last teg, to show you how low it was (Pay attention to the license plate, a possom did that, and all the times getting out of a parking lot or driveway)

(BTW, Pictures were taken by none other then our very own IntegraRS_AnT, thats his DA there)

spring rate does not change, it is a constant, known as k. the force supplied by a linear spring is F=kx, where x is the distance the spring is extended or compressed. for my Tein front springs, 504 lb/in, they exert 504 lbs back when compressed one inch, 1008 if compressed 2 inches, etc. spring rate does not change until the spring reaches solid length, i.e. the coils are pressing on each other. at that point the spring rate becomes infinite.

given the same damping and spring rate, a coilover will not ride any worse than any other spring. And if you have dampers set properly to the spring rates, your car should not bounce. and my car does not lower itself.

So smart :inlove:

thank you for all ur help… i guess ill go with coilovers…i want to know if skunk2 coilovers are good?

i got those on my db1 love the ride, little better than my old ground controls.

coilovers do not giveu a shitty ride unless they are a shitty brand. ground control and skunk2 make great sets. i have the skunk2s on mine and they are hardass coilovers. when i got em i slammed the car on stock struts for 8 months. then i raised it up to a reasonable height and installed a comptech camber kit and ran for 3 years. last 2 months have bene on tokico blues struts and the coilovers have no rust or wear that can be physically seen. the paint and even the factory numbers and skunk2 name are still perfectly visible on the spring itself. the coil sleeve is PERFECT. i highly recommend them.
