Lowering

Hey-
I’m thinking about lowering my '92 GS. Everything is stock but i want better handeling. I was just wondering if any of you out there had any comments about lowering. I wasn’t planning on getting rims soon so it would just be on the stock ones. Does this look good???

Thanks
Tyler

IMO suspension is the first mod that should be done. Mainly because handling on the stock G2 really isn’t that great. Luckily lowering will make the car look better too.

yes, it looks good w/ stock rims. MUCH better than stock ride height on stock rims. and IMO aftermarket rims w/o the car being lowered looks funny.

Is your car lowered 1 inch? btw very nice… i like the white. My friend has a white one and it looks great. Mines red

“1 inch”?? hehe, much lower than that my friend. my car is lowered about 3", probably a little more. I plan on raising it up a little when i get some extra $$ though.

Thats what i thouht… just makin sure tho… TOO LOW FOR ME

i started out with a 2" drop and liked it. but when i got rims it looked like it needed to go lower, so i got coilovers and lowered it more. but like i said i’m gonna raise it up some. I’ll probably raise it up 1/2"-3/4" i’ll need to play around with it and see what i like.

Okay, same problem (well, sort of). I wanna lower my car (BADLY) but two questions: 1) Should I wait until I get rims (even 15’s)? I have the stock 14 inch steel wheels w/wheel covers.

and…

  1. When I DO lower it do I HAVE to replace the shocks/struts too or can that wait?

i’m very confused by why you would have to have rims to lower the car??? here is the order of how good the car will look, the higher the number the better the car will look:

  1. stock wheels, stock ride height
  2. stock wheels, lowered
  3. aftermarket wheels (assuming they are decent looking), lowered

The car is not going to look strange if you lower it but don’t have aftermarket rims…well at least i don’t think so, and i find it hard to see how anyone else could. IMO it will at least look better than stock ride height.

When you lower the car you do not HAVE to replace the shocks, however it is a really good idea. Typically our stock shocks could stand to be replaced anyway. And with stiffer suspension you’re going to be putting a lot more strain on the stock shocks, they won’t perform as well as before and they will wear out faster.

Oh, don’t get me wrong, I know I don’t HAVE to have rims (stock alloys or otherwise) to lower the car, I’m just concerned that it may be too low if I do so with 14’s. I realize dropping the suspension can improve the asthetics of almost any car but since this is my first teg (had accords & civics before), I just wanted to make sure I did it right the first time.

Thanx 4 your help and any opinion on which springs work best?

I don’t want more than a 2" drop.

rims will not change how high the car is (if it does then you’re getting the wrong tires). If you buy larger rims you will get lower profile tires, keeping the overall diameter the same as stock. Now of course there are going to be slight differences. 195-55-15’s will be slightly larger than the stock 195-60-14’s, and 205-50-15’s will be slightly smaller than stock. And i do mean slightly. Also, there are going to be small differences in tires sizes among brands and performance levels. For instance a really sporty 205-50-15 is generally going to have a slightly smaller sidewall than a more “all season” 205-50-15. So, yes there are small differences, but you need not worry about the car being too low on stock rims…cause like i said before if you’re getting rims/tires that are raising the car up any amount to even matter then you’re getting the wrong size tires.

which springs work best? thats a really broad question.
-work best for handling?
-work best for ride comfort?
-work best when considering price as a charactieristic
-…etc…

Some good brands to consider are H&R, Eibach, Neuspeed, Progress, Suspension Techniques, and there are others. Another option would be to get coilovers…which are adjustable.

Are coilovers bad for your car at all?? What is the disadvantage to those because that seems like the obvious choice cause you can change it…

Coilovers
Pros:
-adjustable
Cons:
-usually rougher ride (of course, this is only a con in the minds of some, to others it isn’t a problem

Pros and Cons for normal springs will be just the opposite.

coilovers are no worse on your car than springs are. however typically coilovers have stiffer spring rates, and the stiffer the spring rate the more strain its going to put on your stock shocks and other suspension components. So if you compare skunk2 coilovers with progress lowering springs then yeah…the coilovers are going to be harder on your shocks and they won’t last as long. But if you compare Ground Control Coilovers to neuspeed race springs, then the lowering springs are going to be more harsh on the shocks. So it just depends on what you’re comparing to what.

I’ve had coilovers and normal lowering springs…personally i’ll never go back to normal springs.

WoW, that’s a LOT of real helpful info; thanx. Now, I’ve used lowering springs on cars before (Neuspeed) & have been happy with the results but correct me if I’m wrong ('cause I’m not sure), if I go with coil overs, don’t they take the place of the spring & strut/shock assembly?

Thanks, I was just about to go off on a tangent and you saved me alot of typing.

also, here is a picture of Jordan’s(B17a) car. It is somewhere around 2 inches. Mine looks just about the same, only I am running more camber(not recommended, but I like it for autox), and mine is Aztec Green.

Just about, and I’ve ridden in them both. Although the similarities are only skin deep…
