Steve: I’m going to be sending out my GSR YS1 to Dan in the next week or so to swap out the 5th for an LS 5th. You’ll need to get the LS 5th gear set including main and countershaft bearings. Email mikek@typerparts.com for the parts. He’s cool like that…later.
Once again Leo…thanks.
-Steve
Hey guys how much will the fifth gear cost? also how much for labor?
yes can someone throw up some prices…Im looking into doing this next year and would like to get a idea on pricing of this ???
thanks,
leeo
is this hard to do? i still have my old LS trany and was thinking about doing this swap on my Y1.
drop out your tranny
remove your differential
have a beer
remove the final drive gear from the differential (a bunch of bolts no big deal)
have another beer
put the other final drive onto your differential
put it back into the tranny
put your tranny back into the car.
total cost: about 4 bucks or so for the 6-pack. ![]()
to dork
HEY dork from IOWA…hes talkin about 5th gear…not the final…!!haha
hahaha thanks jay. guess i had one too many beers when i dismantled my tranny. oh and i still haven’t heard back from that jackass who’s allegedly selling me a tranny. the bastard.
thanx kid…ur pretty funny…hHAHAHA…tell ur pops i said hi and give him a beer for me.
Leo - Can he get any stock tranny parts??? Are they OEM?? How long does he take for shipping?? Get me back here or at mynameisbr1@attbi.com
I need some parts by friday at the latest. It is a last resort if I cant get everything through the dealer.

How much of a difference will the 5th gear make in terms of mpg? is it really that significant to change it out?
with a JDM Y1 tranny, 4000 rpm’s is approximately 70 mph. with the USDM LS tranny, it’s approximately 90 mph (on mine anyway).
B R: Jason, you got mail.
Eric: I think it will save a bunch on the freeway. But the main reason I went with the LS 5th is because I do a fairly significant amount of freeway driving and I’m not used to the GSR YS1 5th gear and cruising at 85mph at close to 4500rpms. I know it’s not that bad but I’d rather be cruising at lower rpms on the freeway. Just a matter of personal preference I guess.
Ok, check this. I do 160 miles of Freeway driving a day. I doubt that more than 20 miles out of 300/tank is city driving.
With my LS tranny, I got 330 miles per tank (on Average). And with my GS-R YS1 I get 300-305 miles per tank. So over all, even if 95% of your driving is Freeway Driving, you’re not going to loose that much.
And 90% of my freeway driving is 80+ mph.
However, I plan on putting a LS 5th gear in just for that little bit more. Plus, in the future, I want to go to SoCal and do a top speed run, and every little bit is going to matter.

The LS 5th gear is $ 90.00 from Acura. It is a special order Item most dealers will not have it in stock. You have to pre pay for all special orders and wait for it to arrive. It usually takes 1-7 days for the dealer to get the part from their supplier.
$90 is cheap!!! I just ordered my YS1 3rd gear set from the dealer and the list price on that was $278… Luckily I dont pay list prices ![]()

So whats the deal with the prices? I just picked up a Y1 and I need to get that 5th gear installed.
