I’ve heard of people doing block work, and head work on Ls’s and getting more hp and torque than doing An ls/vtec. Is this true? And has anybody done work to an LS?
I think you can ultimately get more hp(and do it cheaper) by using a vtec head as far as staying NA goes. But don’t let that discourage you because vtec ain’t all that. There’s something to be said about having continuous power throughout the RPM range. If you’re thinking of doing engine work you may want to get a b20 block and do the work to that. You’ll end up with more hp and a lot more torque when it’s all said and done if you use the b20 block. Also you wouldn’t have much downtime with your car if you worked on a different block. Just some suggestions…
I guess my thing is that I want my integra to pretty much stay LS. I’ve been doing alot of research, and to me I think I can have the FASTEST LS around, without Vtec. I want my teg to be all Ls.
I have a 91ls-s with JG pro-series head with JG 301 cam and cam gears, and PYR throttle body. My car has over 243,000 miles on it
and still runs strong and reliably. I say build your b18 engine because this engine has alot of potential.
B18ls>>>>
How fast are you running with that setup and how much hp are you expected to get with that?
I never actually timed my car but have beaten many modded
g2 gs-r and g3-gsr. According to JG Engine Dynamics this setup
is supposed to deliver over 170 hp at the wheel. If you are gonna go with this kind of setup make sure the ported and polished head also has at least a 3 angle valve job.
b18ls,
I have a 91 LS as well. Tatally stocked with 160,000 miles. How much did you setup run and where did you get it done at ?
I had my setup done many years ago. The JG head was installed
at Robocar in 1993 for about $900. This included the ported and polished head, 3 angle vavle job, head gasket, and labor. The JG cams and cam gears were installed by my friend. Like I said, I got a pretty good deal on the JG head because I used know the manager there. If you want to do the same setup now its gonna cost a pretty penny. You can check out how much the JG head is going for by logging on JG Engine Dynamics.com.
I think it is best said by Whitey Vtec isn’t all that. You need to decide if Forced Induction is in the future of you car or N/A. if N/A is in the future go with the LS/Vtec for FI then go with the LS
crower 403 cams 360 shipped
crower dual valve springs 165 shipped
usdm itr piston and rings 275 shipped
1 ls ported and polished head 550 plus shipping
IMO the vtec conversion is basically the same as modifying your ls head completely except…with the vtec to get to maintain better low end and idle. Peak hp and torq is only at the top half of the rpm band. It seems that the more you “open things up”, the more you lose down low. As far as i know, the only real remedys for maintaining the low end on a modified NA ls is cam gears and higher cr. Anything else?
I like the vtec swap idea because its cheaper and cooler; but a lot of people like their ls mods better and i respect that. They’re purists or like to do a bit at a time keeping things simple, or they like to beat vtecs (without driving one).

I want to be able to beat gsr’s with just an LS. I think I want to go forced induction, but however my pay check wont let me…
hey to beat a GSR with an LS is not hard at all think cheater juice! LMAO. It could work but hey if you really want to beat them build up the block and then by the time you save up money for the Turbo or SC then bam all the block and head work is already finished for the Boost. I did my B16 like that I built up the block and the head bit by bit then when it was finished I had saved up enough for my turbo kit.
allmotor lsr
I have 92 teg allmotor ls head port&polish,crower 403 cams with dual springs,3 angle valve job sk2 intake manifold, 62mm throttle body,aem cam gears,aem intake,GSR pistons,GSR oil pump,dc header, greddy cat back venom fuel ecu, fpr at 50psi,GSR y1 tranny,stage 3 clutch master,8500 redline. I think i give GSR,SI a run.
allmotor,
how fast are you running and how much did it cost you?
$4200 I have not run it at the track yet

Here is an FYI, I ran a 14.1 on a built engine with lower compression for turbo 9:1 CR compared to 10.2:1 but it is a B16 but still. you get the picture.
