just wondering if anyone has specs on b16&b18 tranny and diff, i dunno, but it seems that the b16 diff is weaker??

i blew my tranny and im gonna pick another one up, i have a choice of either the b16 or b18 tranny
the differentials on the trannies 91 and older are about 10% smaller than the diffs on the newer trannies. I guess you could call that weaker
b16 tranny - closer gear ratio, quicker accel… but if u want better top speed, in 5th… u should swap a ls 5th gear into a b16 tranny…
i.e.
b16 tranny
4k or so @ 80 mph
b16 w/ls 5th gear
3.5k give or take @ 80 mph
so imo, i would get a b16 tranny, with a ls 5th gear…

first gen B16 trannies are known for their syncro problems…
my S1 is great and it’s had the highest gear ratio of the b16 trannies.
**** 80mph is about 4300rpm with that tranny…
I like the J1
I just got a use B16 J1 trans in my 91 RS, but I wouldn’t recommend it to just anyone. It winds up a lot faster. 70 MPH with the old trans was about 3200 RPM, and now the J1 has at 70 MPH is at 4000 RPM. I lose top end, and it is annoying on the freeway, but around town the car is quicker.
I got the used trans for $500 plus tax/labor.
