I’m getting a custom 2.25" catback system at a muffler shop this week. I’m having a magnaflow muffler put in the same place as the stock one, and then I got a four in. stainless tip. Does anyone have a system like that? How will it sound, and will I get a noticeable power gain? Any response would be appreciated.
I have that exact set-up in fact. I got a resonator too, sounds kinda raspy sometimes, but that might be cause of my cat. Overall, I think you’ll like the sound, and for the price, you can’t beat it. I felt it breathe a tad better on the top end.
Thanks for the reply.
I’ve got that setup excepy I have a canaster style muffler at the end. I recommend that you get a Magnaflow resonator, because a no-name resonator will cause it too be too loud and not sound as good(unless you use a really long generic resonator).
I think there was more of a braing hp gain then real hp.
Well, I got my exhaust done on Tuesday and I love it. It looks good and sounds good too! I’m not sure if I’m getting a power gain, but the exhaust has to be flowing better with the bigger piping. I actually went without a resonator, and I’m still pleased with the sound. It’s not too loud for me at all. I would recommend this system to anyone, it’s a great deal (220 dollars installed at my local muffler shop).

Was the $220 including the muffler, piping, welding, and install?
I’m about to get a Magnaflow 2.25’’ straight pipe to a 3’’ tip tomorrow afternoon. I hope I like the sound…At my local shop my friend got the same installed on a Nissan pickup for $98. I’m hoping mine will cost the same. That’s installed, and everything.

Cool,thanks for the info Nate.
No prob, Adam.

How did that turn out??? Did you elect to have a resonator welded in? I am going in for almost the same system this Tuesday… I don’t want a highway ‘droning’ noise… low end noise is ok though…
Thanks.
Andrew.
I just got the car back a few hours ago after getting the exhaust done… I had everything done in stainless steel with a Carsound cat and a Magnaflow 18"? res. The piping comes back across the driver’s side axel and straight out a 6" barrel muffler with a 4" tip.
I really like it although it’s going to take a little getting used to the loudness (nothing 800W on the inside won’t take car of though). lol.
Be cautious about getting a really large res b/c you might find that you are backfiring a little. I definitely noticed that it’s a little more responsive and much better up top. Flooring it locally isn’t the kindest thing to do to the neighbours though… I like the barrel muffler because it sits nice and high and seems to clear bumps, etc. much better than the stock transverse mounted muffler. If you don’t wan’t a loud exhaust though, don’t go with a hiflow cat or a straight through design.
I’m glad I finally got it taken care of… I had the shop also put in a flange right before the cat and just after the res. If the car sees any track time, I will unbolt that section and toss in a test pipe. Oh yeah… if you are going to go with all stainless piping, make sure you bring your wallet…
Thanks!

Does anybody else have the oval-body 18" Magnaflow in place of the stock one?? I got one on my car last week, and I got my cat taken out at the same time. Noticed a much bigger difference in power than I was expecting, but the problem is the sound…
I’ve got the stock mid-pipe on it right now (with resonator) and it sounds horrible. Farty at low RPM’s and … well actually it sounds pretty cool when it’s wound up But loud as heck!
So should I just replace the midpipe with a slightly bigger one and no resonator? or get a Magnaflow resonator? Also how much to magnaflow resonators cost? I couldn’t find any on their site!
The Magnaflow res should be maybe $100 - $150 depending if you need a long one or not. I think my stainless 18" one was maybe $150. I am going back to have ANOTHER muffler put inline with the barrel-style one. At highway speed it’s so loud that I can’t hear a conversation with my passengers unless we scream at each other. I think my setup is better for the track and now in hindsight, I need to tweak it a little for the street. I am thinking of getting one of those ‘inserts’ to damper the noise a little. Does anyone know if these ‘silencers’ do much of anything??
Maybe it’s the highflow cat causing the excess noise. If so, I’ll need to swap that out also. When it’s near redline and REALLY moving, the sound is great and very smooth. At idle and at the lower end of the power band, it also sounds agreeable. When cruising at anywhere from 80kmpH and up, it’s absolutely unbearable and my windows, eardrums, etc. feel like they might explode. Being a reference audio enthusiast, this has a disappointing effect on my listening experience. For the coin that I spent, I should have tracked down a stainless HKS or RS*R.
I think Magnaflow should make a catback or axle back kit for our tegs – it would be fabulous. AFAIK, we still need to resort to custom solutions because they don’t have a kit for our old cars… lol
Thanks,
Andrew.
my car sounds like a bumblebee too :bored:
It doesn’t sound like a swarm of bees… It has a very deep sound but it seems to get waaaay too loud when I’m really moving…

i just instaled a airmass warlock cat back and it sounds horable kind of like a weedeater at low cruise speeds.an if i blip the throtle, very raspee. i did make a test pipe out of my old cat, could this make it sound this way,i do not think so because it just like there was never a cat there.i even cut of the 4.5 in tip off to see if that would help.it did very little. any help would be great
thanks mike
Ok here’s my exact setup:
OEM manifold and downpipe followed by custom test pipe, that goes to midpipe w/ res that was installed by speedy a couple years ago ( i was desperate). that friggin thing cost me like $200 and it’s a double-walled pipe too…
from there, there’s custom piping to the magnaflow oval body 18" muffler in place of the stock one, and then a custom pipe going out.
Then, I just put SS tip on (just a finisher tip… doesn’t affect the sound).
At an idle, if i just blip the throttle, i love it… rumbles. between 2000-3500RPM, it’s just plain annoying. Loud and bumble-bee like. above that, it sounds like a race car! REALLLY loud and aggresive.
I’ve so far been assuming that it’s my midpipe and poor resonator giving the horrible sound. But I don’t know what to do about it… I was thinking about getting them to just put a custom single-walled pipe in and see how that affects it, and THEN see about a different resonator if it needs it… but that would cost quite a bit if I did need a resonator after all…
My muffler cost like $180, so I’d REALLY like to come up with a solution other than getting a different muffler…
I dunno what to do… I did so much research before i got the muffler… I told the guys at the exhaust shop i wanted an oval body so it wouldn’t have to be angled and look funny, and I wanted the quietest oval body from magnaflow I could get. And now this… very discouraging… So any suggestions would be appreciated.
sorry for makin this so long!!
Thought I’d post an update…
I got a resonator put in in place of my test pipe.
WOW. Car sounds incredible now! Not much louder than stock, and just a perfect tone! Very happy!
What kind of res did you use??
I’m glad you’re happy with the sound/performance.
Take care,
Andrew
