main bearing caps-which way does the arrow point?

I just got the block back from the machine shop and Im beginning to check the journal clearances… The only problem is that I forgot which way the caps go on…Does the arrow on the cap point towards the flywheel or towards the oil pump? thanks

there should be markings on the side of the caps. like a 3 and if the cap is on right the rod has the top half of the 3 and the cap has the bottom. at the worst the bearing tabs should be on opposit of each other,i wish i still had my pics but the tabs should NEVER be on the same side.

also scence it sounds like they got mixed up use plasti crush gauge and clearnce chack every rod bearing twice. its no fun to put in all that work to spin a bearing due to a simple over sight

cap arrows point toward the oil pump, and yes the bearing tabs connect with eachother. dunno why the other guy says not to. your caps are marked 1-5 w/ arrows. i build motors for a living, if you need any other info let me know. good luck

I is like SilentRage82 said arrow to the front tab will be on the same side.

Let us know if you need more help.

ya my bad, im just ASE certified engine builder and have worked at south west engines for 5 years.

thanks for all the responses… I got all the clearances checked and they are within spec… I need to know if the main cap bolts need oil on the threads?
also installing eagle rods with arias pistons… had alot of trouble with installing the circlips on to the pistons (weird design)… also would like to know if there is a specific way to install the rods on to the pistons? does it matter which way the rod is facing? I know that the stock rods have to go on a certain way but do these eagle rods have to? I am using ACL standard bearings, do they have their on specs for clearance or do I just go with the clearances from the factory manual (they are within factory specs)… First engine buil on my one…I will get some pics up… all input is appreciated, thanks

The rods would say if they had to be a certain way, most after markets dont matter, the piston does have to face torwards the #1 cyl/timing belt, there is usally a grove or some marking. make sure the ring gaps are in correct order. and the best bearing clearance is .002 thousands inch. some people like to go tighter but forged pistons and rods expand more then factory. talk to the old one. www.theoldone.com hes a very good engine builder has been building all his life. his name is larry. he can tell you everything you need to know

the pistons dont have any markings on them… Is it possible that it doesnt matter which way they go in? Also would like to know how to remove/install new seals for the side covers…Is there a special tool needed? thanks

you mean the fron and rear main oil seals? no speacil tools needed, just oil up the seal so it slides in easy, and use a large socket or peace of wood and gently tap them home. make sure you install it the right way, ive seen so many pics of people putting on rear main oil seals in backwards

My SRP pistons didn’t have the markings on them either but the machine shop marked the intake side of each piston for me. Apparently the relief for the intake valves is a different size than the exhaust. For the rods the machine shop told me it doesn’t matter which way to put them in, but for consistency, I just put the stampings on the rods all on the same side.

ya, also dont forget to balance that bottom end, with the stock bottom end its not a problem but now you have differant weight in the rotating assy. so thats a step you dont want to miss. and ask them to mark the intake side of pistons. also ask them to mark what piston for what cyl. because each cyl is not exactly the same size. so ask to mark the best matching piston for that cyl. or they can hone the block to the exact size of the pistons. which either case they will mark the piston 1-4.

here are a couple pics so far

I will post more with progress

Looks great. I wish my block came back from the shop that clean :

dammit how do you post pics, it always ask for a url. ive been trying to figure this out forever

hey was the block decked? looks clean but not resurfaced?

no it wasnt decked…he said that the deck was still true…he said that he didnt want to take anything off the top unless he really had to because of it being an interference engine… but it checked out

his images are hosted on photobucket. you have a certain amount of space here to host pictures, but it isn’t a lot

alright i guess i have to check out this photobucket. your like the 100th time ive herd about it.
