Massive coolant leak, smoking, obviously overheating

Hey guys. I need some help: 20 minutes into my ~30 minute commute home from work, my 92 ls started overheating. This was on the highway, traveling at highway speeds. I pulled off at the next exit and popped the hood. Smoke poured out from behind/underneath the intake and I could hear a distinct hissing/sizzling sound. I figured that this was just the sound of coolant burning off of the hot components, but i thought that the hissing could perhaps be a tiny pinhole in a leaking hose spitting out coolant. Also, I put the heater on full blast while still on the highway, and as the temp gauge climbed, the heat in the cabin got cooler. I let the car sit for a bit, added some coolant and drove home with the same results. I was wondering if this is a common thing that people with almost 20 year old tegs have. I looked at the hoses I could get to and none appeared to be leaking. Is there another hose underneath the intake? I’ve searched the forums but haven’t found a similar thread pertaining to quite the same problem. Unfortunately this is my only car and you know, I need to go to work and stuff. Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks,
dave

Theres 2 in the middle of the firewall close to the center. Also lift the passenger carpet back towards the middle, if your heater cores leaking it’ll be wet there.
Check your oil too to see if its milky for a possible bad head gasket. Hope that helps

fill with water. run. watch.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of things it could be. There are several small diameter hoses that run to things like the throttle body and fast idle valve. There are heater hoses that cross that area on their way to the firewall. The water pump inlet pipe runs across the back of the block under the intake so look at it also. Hopefully, it is just one of the rubber hoses and not something more serious. Try running the car again and watch for the leak or find/buy a coolant system pressure tester and find the leak with it. Good Luck

Okay, I’m going outside right now to poke around a bit more. I actually saw this [URL=“http://www.acuraworld.com/forums/f74/coolant-leak-86670/”] on another board, and it sounds similar to what I have going on.

Thanks for the advice. I will repost when I have (hopefully) resolved the issue.

Issue resolved! There was a small hose between the lower part of the intake manifold close to the block, and the bottom of the throttle body hemorrhaging coolant like a supersoaker. I went to the parts store and the guy gave me the hoses (I managed to wreck the one between the air intake and the valve cover in the process so I had to replace that one too) for free. I replaced it, warmed it up, and no problems…for now.

Thanks for all the help, guys.
