Hey guys, so I went to a place today and they loosened up my crank bolt. But the damn thing is still on there pretty good. What can I do to get it off?

And is the 12mm bolt on top of the alternator the adjusting bolt? That things is kind of in a tricky spot. What is the best way to get at that?

Thanks guys,

Jeff

Use some sort of pry bar to pull out on the crank pulley while you tap it with a hammer. Should come off. Actually I think mine almost fell off after one tap.

For that bolt on the alternator, I managed to reach in there with one empty hand and then handed the wrench down to that hand with my other hand. It’s pretty tight to work in there, but that’s how I got it… Might be able to get it from under the car too… not sure.

Well the bolt is still on so, I can’t take the pulley off till I get that off.

OH  Thought you meant the bolt was loosened but the pulley was seized to the shaft.
I would suggest renting a crank shaft pulley removal tool that will hold the pulley while you loosen the bolt. A chain or strap wrench will also work, but you may as well have the right tool for the job!

for the alternator adjusting bolt, do you have a small 10mm socket? I have one and it works fine. Otherwise, yeah go in with a wrench.

For the crank pulley bolt, try doing:
in gear, have the brakes applied. Then, use a LONG pry bar on it, and put a sledge to the pry bar.
tighten it the same way. The crank pulley bolt is all about impact…since it turns with the motor.

by pry bar do you mean like say a crow bar? Hmm… for some reason I’m not getting this. I understand impact since the pulley rotates with the motor, but I’m supposed to wack the pry bar? I’m sorry that this is taking so long, but it’s my first time with this and I want to do it right. Thanks again.

sorry, just usee a long long pipe…put it over the ratchet…

Yes if you can fit a tool on the bolt and then slide a pipe over the handle you should have no problem breaking a bolt loose. I have bent a few pipes before though… and broke some tools doing this.

You could always just drive it to a non dealer place to have it fixed. Or heck if your dealer doesn’t try to rip you off like mine does take it there.

so, I get that, but how do I keep the pulley from moving?
