Moroso Distributor or stock?

I need a new distributor and have been doing some shopping. One from Acura will cost about 280.00, one fron autozone/ advance auto part will run about 220.00, or I can get a moroso for about 375.00. I am running a b17 with msd, and soon to be turbo. Has anyone used the moroso distributors and is it worth the price difference? Thanks.

I was in the same situation as you. i chose to go with the OEM distributor from the dealer. Price difference is a lot for basically the same thing. And do not buy from AUTOZONE! Kragen is ok, but not autozone. good luck with the choice

Whats wrong with autozone? All their parts have lifetime warrenties so even if it does break, just go back and get another one anytime you want. What other companies offer that?

alright i agree with the good deals on warranties. But, ive had a horrible experience with them! they gave me the wrong distributor 3 times! good thing we were doing the labor ourself. also the distributors they gave me did not even have the spring in it. well maybe it was just a bad experience, but i went straight to acura, and there it is…

I use to work at autozone, and most of the folks that worked in the store, including the managers, knew nothing about cars. They matched part numbers. Also the autozone computer list 93 as the first year for the GSR with the b17. Are you mainly running stock or are you boosted? I have done more research and I can find little information on why the moroso is better.

Ok, I agree with you. Not everyone at autozone knows whats going on (not refering to you KnightsCustoms). I’m sure you just had a bad experience at that autozone.

Just an FYI, I saw that MSD is making a billit dizzy for the B-series engine. If you already have the MSD products… Check it out.

MSD Sport Compact

to be honest i dont know if there is a difference between a moroso dist or a stock one. but i went to a friend that works for OPAK racing(spoon sports) and he said there isnt much difference at all. he has a spoon sports crate motor running 11’s with nitrous and he still uses an oem dist, the same one i got.

Does any one know if the oe uses sealed ball bearings in the distributor? I got to looking at the msd dist. ( I know msd is a touchy subject, some hate it some love it, I have had good luck with msd) It takes an external ignition module and coil, It might be stronger than the the stock one. I am going to call the msd reps and the moroso reps and talk to them later. I will keep everyone posted.

be sure to ask them for teh bearing size please. also if it is good to at least 10,000 rpm’s

Well I talked to both the msd rep and the moroso rep and I have to say that the moroso reps ( I talked to three different reps) are the dumbst tech people, other than the compaq techs. Here are the ups and downs:

Moroso- Reps did not know too much about it, they said it had a high out put module, thats it. It can use the stock module, there are no replacement parts. If there customer service is as bad as there techs, I pitty them.

MSD- I was impressed with the rep the I talked to. He knew the answers to all my questions. The Msd distrubitor has been testet at 12,000 rpms and proven soild. They put the ingition module external to keep it away from the heat of being inside the distrubitor, but you have to buy it from msd which is about another $100.00. The distrubitor uses uses a aftermarket cap, that can only be bought through msd, and uses a stock rotor button, which it comes with. It will be released for sale at the end of April.

I will be buying the MSD distrubitor and Ingition module, the distrubtor is retail at $400.00 and Ingition module will be retail at $100.00, but in the stores is should be cheaper, I found it on nopi for $345.00.

Good update. I know the techs are not the guys who designed the products, but damn! you would think Moroso would have some decent people.

Anyway… MSD  This is a long overdue product from them, and usually their Billit Distributors are “bullet proof”. Were they able to tell you anything about the bearings used like Schu asked? If it can survive 12k then that is impressive. That is usually a weekness with the OEM distributors along with the failing coils and ignitors.

Been busy, but I forgot to ask what size the bearings were, I was just impressed to hear that it would with stand 12 grand. I will give an up date on how it works in the car when i get it in may.

Right on… I had priced this unit out some time ago when I first heard about it coming to market. I have had to go back to stock ignition after running an after market ignition for many many years with no problems. the car is just no as crisp with the stock internal ignition.
Schu

I bought a moroso distributor and the guy said it was for a 91 1.8…went to put it in and the car wouldn’t start…anyone else have issues with moroso dist.? or maybe he sent me the wrong one?

Distributor problem?

Well I would say to check to make sure you didnt put it in backwards. Then you would either have to advance or retard your timing depening on the way you put it on. Do you have a timing light?? I hope you do because when i did mine i didnt have it and had the same problem. Still dont have a timing light but you can more or less loosen the hold down bolts on the dist. and try and see what position will make it start for you. I seriously recommend getting that timing light. Mines run like crap now because of it and I’m guessing in your case, is causing it not to start. Hope I helped…

Are they cheap to buy or will pep boys or something let me borrow it? thanks for your help

the msd set up is very very awesome!!!i found it at autozone (the store i live by has good guys there that know their shit, and cars)the msd distributor is only 285 and some change my buddy was able to get the life time warrenty for me which is so funky fresh!!!highly recomend!!!
