When I start up my car it idles fine but once I drove it, it hesitates pretty bad and sputters and accelerates really slow and “dogs ass”, and “perks” up a bit at mid-rpms (3K til about 4K). Theres no CEL and I just replaced my distributor, cap and rotor, spark plugs, and disconnected the cat(now reconnected). My mechanic said it has good compression in all cylinders and suggested replacing the distributor/cap and rotor which i did. I pulled the new plugs and so did the mechanic and we found gas on all four electrodes. I advanced and retarded the timing of the distributor and it still sputters when given throttle. Also the mechanic looked at the timing belt and found it was recently replaced and it was snug and he almost guaranteed it didn’t slip timing. Oh also I replaced the fuel filter about a month ago and didn’t notice any lack of power. So I’m pretty puzzled on whats going on and I don’t feel like replacing everything and I don’t want to nickel and dime my self to death.
im having the EXACT! same issues with mine… actually was gonna post it up till i saw this. Have you noticed a major drop in gas mileage? i did, im talkin 165miles to a tank! i was almost wonderin about the map sensor, if it could go bad without throwin a code…
My gas MPGs are crappy but not that bad!! I get 250 miles to the tank I think may be less. I just ordered a denso o2 sensor so i hope it does the trick, their like $23 +tax so not too bad. Its supposed to come on Monday or Tuesday so I’ll let ya know what happens.
op, i know you said the cel is not illuminated, but have you checked for codes? a code may be stored regardless.
also, when did this problem start occurring exactly? was any work done prior?
definitely check your ignition timing. especially since you’d replaced the distributor. also, if the t-belt is new, there is the possibility that it was installed incorrectly/ has jumped. the ignition timing will expose that. kill 2 birds
I went and bought a new o2 sensor as well. Put it in last night but i was too tired to go drive it, lol. Drove it this morning and no hesitation, so far it seems fixed. I also filled my tank so ill post my gas milage to. I hope ur o2 sensor works for you man. good luck
I actually checked it last night and the ecu flashed one short flash so that would be code #1 I believe. Its supposed to be coming on Monday or Tuesday so I’ll let ya know how it goes, and thanks man I hope so too lol!
Double check your map and tps sensor, they will cause these symptoms. This happened to me when I had my turbo Crx,I spooled and the pressure knocked the tps sensor loose, acceleration was horrible and everything would go back to normal after 3500 rpms
I bought whatever o2 autozone sells that has the plug on the end of it. I paid like $62 I think. They have cheaper ones but I think you have to cut and wire it yourself which is not worth it to me when you have a OEM plug right there.

Im almost 99% sure its my o2 b/c my ob0 ecu is flashing the o2 code. before i made this thread I never knew that you could “read” an obd0 ecu for codes, i just thought I was s.o.l since theres no obd0 plug-in readers out there. Anyways back on topic the Denso one I got at Autozone should be coming in today so I’ll post how it goes. I tried taking the old o2 out yesterday with a 7/8’’ wrench and I think its time to rent the o2 socket from the zone lol.
I’m OBO0, I just personally would just rather use the plug if it is already there, if it wasn’t then whatever. I hate twisting, soldering, heat wrapping wires. And I just bought the tool then returned it. haha.
Well the o2 didn’t do shit lol. I’m losing a little coolant, but I know that exhaust is leaking into my cooling system b/c when I turn the car on with the radiator cap off coolant spews out. I took it too my mechanic who is really really honest and he said its probably a head gasket. He also idled the car with the cap off for a while until no more coolant spat out and got a tester out called a block check test/combustion leak test which he found carbon monoxide(exhaust) in the cooling system.
My main question is does this sound right? And would that have to do with the lack of power I’m experiencing? My car starts up with a little bit of sputtering but it doesn’t last long. For the first mile or so my car has some hesitation, but after a mile or so it dogs ass and barely accelerates especially under 3500 rpms.
