Well as simple as this fix seems I’m at a loss for how to fix it.
My scenario, I advanced my timing 2 days ago and all was well…I even felt a difference in low end power (less bogging at low rpms) Well earlier today my car starts leaking oil from what looks to be the oil filter. So I assume its a blown filter gasket (I think it was on too tight, my bad) Even though I was only 500 miles into the new oil I replaced the filter for good measure and topped off my oil pan. I don’t think any of theses things are the problem, but I wanted to install a fuel pump kill switch today.
I’m working on that project and test to see if I cut the right wire (ylw/blk under rear seat). She cranked almost started then died, so I had the right wire (huzzah!), but after finishing the switch I go to crank her on and there no go. I listen for the fuel pump and I can hear it turn on when I turn the ignition key. When I turn it to start the enigne just ticks, My rpms go up to like 1 or so but there no fire in the pistons.
Did I flood her by checking for the pump too much or do i have a bad ignition coil? I dunno. I’m so upset my baby isn’t running I can’t think plus it pretty late at night. Are there any late night Gen 2 gods out there to help me?

when a car won’t start there are 3 main questions you need to start with:

  1. Is the starter turning the motor over?
    -if yes, move on to #2. If no, check charging system and starter itself.

  2. Is the motor getting fuel?
    -a good start is to do like you said and listen for the fuel pump. but that still doesn’t tell you enough. Try pulling the spark plugs and seeing if they are wet from fuel, or if you smell excess fuel from the cylinders (you can turn it over w/o the plugs in it if needed)
    -if the motor is getting fuel, move to #3. If not, then check fuel pump, filter, injectors and relay

  3. Is the motor getting spark?
    -check this by pulling a plug, then connect it to its plug wire. ground the plug somewhere on the engine, chassis…whatever it takes. then turn the motor over. You should see a spark span the gap.
    -if you’re not getting spark it could be the plugs, wires, distributor (cap, rotor, coil, or ignitor), or even a strange wiring problem.
