My new toys... .25mm over PCT (CTR) Pistons

oh yeah Jason… just don;t take a LOOOOOOOONGass time like me…

Jason,
Heres a few thoughts:
The fact the owner(I think) said that the head for that motor has a 3-angle valve job is probably the most contributing factor to those pistons making decent power. Remeber that Vtec heads all have a 3-angle stock and with the decreased head surface in P73s and PCT heads its even more critical. I think if you consider going with a 3 or even 5-angle on your LS head it’ll help to smooth out the combustion in the chamber. I still think that such a specifically designed piston(valve relief) should be used in its intended head.

Look at the freaking temperature of that second run. I’d kill to be able to dyno in 50 degree weather. Depending on the humidity with that low of a temp, 10 of the top end hp in that graph could be a little exagerated.

I’m sure your set-up will work fine, but I would bet that if you gave me the same motor with USDM P73s I could make the exact same amount of power. I still feel that the PCTs are just overkill and this is an example of a best case scenario.
Thanks for throwing up the graph.

s’funny, Ive wanted to go with CTR pistons but they were back ordered… If you end up not wanting those CTR pistons you could trade him, he ended up getting JDM ITR pistons and he hasn’t used 'em yet… they’d probably be more stable in your LS from what J. said, and Ive’s building a b17 so he could REALLY use those CTR pistons… dunno just a thought!
Actually, when I was enquiring about PCTs, it was long before my current motor plans in general. I’m still glad I ended up with the P73-00s since they will be used in an even later future project than the one I’m working on now. Thanks for your concern though Alim.

Robbie - Maybe we can have a race to see who can get theirs done first. You have a what, 2 year lead on me?? hahaha

.J. - I am definately getting a valve job done when I get the head worked. I am going to do some form of port & polish, I just dont know where I want to get the work done yet.
Although, he said that the OTHER (lower hp/torque) run was the LS that had the valve job, not the one with the PCT’s. The LS with the PCT’s only have those pistons, crower 403’s and some ARP rod bolts. That was it for the mods on it.
I am going to try running them anyway. The way that I am looking at it is that it should work fine, and if it doesnt I can always change something to make it better. Anyway, I already have them sitting here…

I would be shocked if an engine with compression that high didn’t have at least a 3-angle. That would really be impressive if it were a stock head! I mean with the dome like on the PCTs that compression is going to need as much air as possible to burn effciectly, or the static compression is going to be wicked. I think you already brouched the idea, but why not LSVTEC? I know there is a member here who is going full type R and who would sell the hardware for cheap.
Let me know,

I just want to do an LS project for now. I like the LS a lot and when built right, it can be a really strong, reliable engine.
I have thought about doing LS/VTEC, but that wouldnt be for a long time and it would only go into a track car. I wouldnt drive one as a daily driver.
I am gonna have to pass on your offer for those parts too. I dont have a vtec project in the making at the moment and I doubt I will for a while. Thanks for the offer though.
