My OEM projectors retro-fit

I know there’s a DIY on how to do this, but i just want to share on how i did it.
The projectors came out of a DA one piece headlight. The one piece was broke and so i rescued the part’s out of them.

Well i started by taking the bumper off. I then took the headlight off and used a blow-drier to heat it up.
I pulled the glass off the housing and got to work.

I took to OEM blocking thing out and cut the back of the projector reflector to fit over the HIDs.

Now the projectors lined up just right,so i didn’t have to do much to level them.

I used a can to cut out some raps to go around the projectors so the light will stay inside and not come out making the glare spread out.

I also got some LED strips that you can cut,i put them inside just for fun. I think it came out good, you?

Now i put everything all back together and here it is.

BEFORE

AFTER

Ill post the night pics as soon as its dark out.

After adjusting everything and wiring my LEDs,this is the outcome.

I would of did without the LED. I don’t see good output from the projector though? You should put some 4300k bulbs in there also. Post more pics

Most of it is the OEM glass, but I’m not blinding people anymore. And there alot brighter then they wore before. I had to change the bowls out cause the guy before me cut them and fucked them up. I tried to straiten up the cut,but it didn’t work out. What kind of pics would you want me to take? Let me know and ill take them. The LED strips was just a test look,i like the way they look so ill keep them in for now. And as soon as i get some extra cash, ill be getting 4k HIDs

you should sand down the flutes, will prob give the light a cleaner look and better output. Good job so far though.

Flutes?? Sorry but I’m new at this hole thing. You talking about the lines in the glass? Can you sand glass?

he lines in the lense of the headlight are the flutes

Ok thanks. But can they be sanded off without breaking the glass it self?

your lights are too dim and it’s not because of the flutes in the headlights because i had a retrofit in my jdm eg headlights with flutes and they were 20x brighter than yours. its because you are using the wrong projectors. those projectors that you have are too small and were never made for hids. you should go back to the regular headlights or get a better or bigger projector before you get in an accident. i see this is your first retrofit too, you should look online to find out how to do it right because i never seen anyone do it like this.

There pretty bright to tell you the truth, but ill be getting bigger projectors soon. I was going to gut out the headlight and just have the projectors in but it was my first time and all the forums i went on are all about doing it in JDM lights, not the OEM ones (unless i missed it) and didn’t want to gut it and have to buy new housings. There is a new VW beetle here at the yard but can’t pull parts tell Supper Saturday. I am also going to get some 5k HIDs cause the 10k are way to bright and blue. I’m just glad I’m not be blinding people anymore.

i really find it hard to believe that your headlights are bright, when in the pictures they look very dim. pictures tells the truth. even with bigger projectors, if it’s not made for hids, you will get the same results, maybe just a little better. cutting out the projector to make your 9004 hid bulbs fit is a bad idea too.

Well the bowls wore cut already and i tried to clean them up a little but failed on doing so,so i had to get new ones. But yeah,i understand what you are saying. This was just a little test that i did for now tell i can do it the right way. Ill see if i can take better pics of how bright they truly are. There not as bright as the 5k but there bright. But I’m happy with the outcome for now.

5k refers to the light color(Kelvin) not brightness.

You need to do some research.

Three things wrong with this retrofit.

  1. Crappy projectors
  2. Fluted lens
  3. Crappy aftermarket HID

Coming from a retrofitter, invest on some decent OEM projectors/ ballast and bulbs. It’s not about size of projectors. I’m a true beleiver in OEM Hid and will not go higher than 4300K. (I’m still runnin the same bulbs/ballast running 10 years strong). HID retroffit is a lot of work and can be costly. I’m not hating and I just wanted to point few things out. I’m currently doing a TFX retro on my spare Denji’s for my EG as well. Good luck.

Its cool man. I know i didn’t do it the right way and expect to have you guys point it out to me. I’ve been reading this thread http://forums.g2ic.com/showthread.php?203122-HID-Retro&highlight=projector and i think ill be doing this setup as soon as i get my one pieces. Like i said before, this was only a test and its ok for now.
But now that ill be getting the one pieces, ill have the time to do things the right way. Thanks for the reply’s guys. And if any one has a good site to order some good projectors, post it up. I’ve looked all over and only come up on fog light projectors or ballast without the glass. Thanks guys.

i agree with platinumG2, but the size of the projectors has a lot to do with a retrofit. especially when you were using a small 2 inch projector, might even be smaller. the right size projector should be 2.5 inches or 3 inch (if it fits inside the headlights). your BIGGEST mistake was using a damaged projector. once the projector is damaged or cut, it is useless. i told you when you first got the projectors that they were too small, obviously you didn’t listen and went ahead and did it anyways.

It wasn’t that i didn’t want to listen db1st,i just didn’t like the way you posted the reply on HT. I didn’t want to cut my OEM lights all to hell for the wrong projectors but put them in the way i did it because i was simply experimenting. I understand if you wanted to help me,but you showed a smart ass attitude and that is why i came off on you, that’s all. I have been looking and reading on how to do this retro fitting and the only thread on doing the OEM ones shows the housings cut all up and extended,i didn’t want that. Now ill be getting to one pieces and ill be saving up for the Low beam: Lexus RX-AFS / TSX-R Lens found on this page http://www.theretrofitsource.com/product_info.php?products_id=155 And some E46-R shrouds. Now the only thing i want to know is,do i need the 85122+ Bulbs or can i make the 9004 HIDs work with this,as the forum I’ve been reading didn’t say anything about it. I also seen how you put the L brackets on,how dose that work? And what projectors did you use again? Can you post the link for me as I’m still shopping.

there’s nothing wrong with doing a retrofit in a fluted lens. the only thing you loose is the cut-off. it’s still a bright, even light output.

you have to use the DS2 bulbs…you can’t use the ones you have now, because of the poor quality and it wont fit.
