Reading the threads about clearing out tails (whether it be 90-91’s or 92-93’s)… I decided to try (things you do when you’re bored with lots of time) and pry out the inner housing off my clear tails and throw them on my 90-91 tails. I originally painted my clear tails but someone in some parking lots kicked it and broke off a piece of the corner of the clear tails (where the gill is)… so I’m using the hairdryer method to do this little project…
This is something you would only do if you’ve got no money, spare parts and lots of time… I’ll post some pics.
Alright… so if you didn’t know… here’s the story. I purchased clear tails and did the red/clear look (stock style)… but then someone decided to kick it while i was at work and broke off the gills (one side)…
So i thought maybe I could open up the broken painted clear tails and use the inner housing and throw them on the stock outer housing…
Here are the pics… tell me what you guys think…?
This is where I’m taking apart the painted busted clear tails… As you can see, i’m using a conventional hairdryer ehhe…
This is what the inside of the clear tails look like…
The outer housing from the stock 91 tails… with the innerhousing from the clear tails…
The outer housing from the stock 91 tails sealed on the inner housing from the clear tails…
I took off that plastic insert with the pink lines and used the insert from the clear tails. I took off all the bulb reflector brackets from the stock tails and put them in the clear tails. I also used the little insert for the reverse lights from the stock ones (as you can see from the pic). Although I took out the plastic insert for the brake lights for a cleaner look…
N FUL FX: Yeah dude I know what you mean… that’s why I used that insert to try and cover as much of the bulb as possible!!
SLOWDRIVER: Well… put it this way, it took a lot longer because I only had access to a freggin hair dryer… but it would be a lot faster with an actual heat gun. So with the hair dryer, it took me about five hours!!
But remember, this is NOT something that should be rushed, other wise, you may beat yourself after cracking the housing because of not having enough time!!!
N FUL FX i knew you cleared out your tails but i couldnt find the old thread. i read that you used sand paper for the red lines and sanded them down. i just wanted to know what grit sand paper you used to get the white smoked out clear look. TIA
im not n ful fx, but i did it and started w/ 180 and used like 8 different grits up to 2000. a little overkill, but it worked. then i used meguiars plastic cleaner and polish on the plastic cuz i had it from renewing my one pieces. the smoked look, comes from putting that plastic piece back in.
