I rattle canned my edges with rustoleum white first.
This is after i rolled on the paint.
And my final result.
Comment, critique?
I was happy with the outome. This was months ago, right now I’m in the process of doing a complete new water base paint job. Will post pictures if i get it done.
legit house wall paint roller? Mad props if so. Looks good
Thank you! It was a fine micro fiber roller I picked up from lowes. I remember the “wtf” look on ppls faces passing by. It was a lot of fun. :chill:
Did you use the white (recycled mineral spirits)? I did the same the first time I rolled mine and it came out dull like that. Used startex the second time and had it super watery and it came out 5x shinier. Looking good tho!
Came out good for what it is. You really need some black accents bad, like your lip. Too much white for my taste.
Always cool to see other ppl try it! Yeah I went with mineral spirits. It was suppose to have mirror finish, no orange peel. Do not, do not, do not not not use rustoleum clear over ur paint… After sanding base smooth and laying rusto clear, it cracked my paint all the way to the bottom. Had to re sand and I ended up rolling 2 coats and leaving it. Hmm…I didn’t know about startex, your finish looks shiny! I have to agree with da6yo, a little black make it pop, and it’s good for what is is, at a 10 or 20 foot glance haha
Looks good from a distance in pictures
probably looks like shit in person because theres no way you can get a good paint job with rollers, its going to have orange peel and uneveness to it.
You would say that. I live on a busy street, let me brag a little and tell u how many ppl came by asking to paint their car. Honestly, I didn’t know sh … It is a 10 foot glance paint, and naw you wouldn’t notice. besides who would bring there face that near to a car? You wana lick it? :chill:
I paint cars for a living, and not to be a dick, but I somewhat agree with Tippey764. Even after sanding, people who know what they’re looking for, will see roller-texture…
Imo it’s a good idea that you’re looking into water-based paint and a more “correct” way to paint a car.
But I will admit, it looks a ton better than other roll-on jobs I’ve seen. Props on that, sir.

It is by no means a perfect paint job but honestly looks better than some new OEM jobs (have you noticed the horrible peel on new cars?). My paint job looks pretty good orange peel is not bad at all and I never sanded it. If you mix the paint super thin it will level itself out, the rusto paint jobs with tons of peel were too thick or sprayed on.
And thats the thing. Any pro can easily pick apart my car and how shitty the paint is. To the average girl or friend or person getting close the the car it appears like regular paint, feels like regular paint and actually looks pretty good and shines. Also it costed me about 100 bux most if it in sand paper. For a ‘proper’ paint job I would rather sell the DA and take the few thousand it would take to paint it and buy a newer car unless I did it myself (which I don;t know how).
Also this rusto shit is tough, my front lip took a beating has scrapes cracks etc no peeling of paint or flaking just a few rock chips here and there.
Separates the men from the boys paint jobs. Haha
Glass is of the first order and my DA will have nothing less.
Yeah its so so. The idea came from a YouTube vid I saw. The guy knew what he was doing, and for 100 or less, it does look better then most old chipped paint out there haha. If its a temporary paint job why not? If you sand ur finish correctly there’s no reason why you will have any roller marks or orange peel. Thats cool to hear unified112. After this, I liked the process so much I actually went ahead and took collision repair classes, which is why I’m going water base. Agreed with deceptakhan. Although I love my car, I can’t see myself paying overkill for paint job that’s worth twice my car. I’m sure unified agrees the “correct” way to paint will leave holes in your pockets.
Indeed it would. A proper paint job will run well over 3k, if the jambs/trunk/bay are done.
When I did mine it was an easy 50hrs labor. But thankfully I stripped the car to bare metal, sprayed etching primer, primer, sealer, basecoat and clearcoat, wet-sanded and buffed it for less than a grand in materials and just time.
I’m not knocking your paintjob at all, you said it yourself, it’s a 10ft paintjob and most people won’t notice… But people who KNOW paint can tell the difference between basecoat/clearcoat, single stage, aerosol, roll on, etc. For the price you can’t beat it, but I would never do this to a car.
Yup, your right about that. I wouldn’t do it again, atleast not to my car. That being said, I’m glad I did it. I hope it inspires someone like it did to me. Spark up your interest, wether your going cheap or quality paint, it really isn’t that hard. I guess what I want to point out is… anyone reading this can do it if willing. :chill:
