My teg's done

Normally I look forward to Fridays but this past Friday was one from hell. Let’s start with Fridays weather in NY. Strong winds all of Thursday night and torrential downpour Friday morning. I just found a new route to work the day before and was heading to the train station early in the morning when splash  … I drove my baby dead into a what was essentially a small pound. Wasn’t driving awfully fast but the combination of crappy weather, pissss poor lighting conditions on this particular road, me taking a new but not unfamiliar road and perhaps not being fully awake yet (happened at 5:30am) led to this outcome.

I sat there for a minute or 2 thinking wtf just happened. It felt like a bad dream and i only wish it was. Some cabbie passed by me and sent waves of water splashing onto the car, which led to water quickly rushing in through the doors. That’s when i packed my crap and bailed. Quickly called a friend to help me get out but as I sat there flagging people to turn back (wish someone had done the same for me) and just watching my car sit in water up to the top of the back bumper, i figured I had to do something. I popped the car into neutral and somehow pushed it out of the water and up a slight hill (gotta love adrenaline). Shortly after my friend arrives with his truck and we pushed it over into a residential neighborhood. Should have called out sick but went into work and still got in trouble.

About an hour ago just checked on it, engine made some nasty noises and didn’t start. Tonight or tomorrow I hope to take some pictures for you guys and maybe get an audio clip. sigh I just started a new job and was beginning to figure out what to do with the teg. I absolutely loved the car despite it’s age and lil demons that the integras can have. All my friends and family kept asking when I was going to get a another car but I always asked, what’s wrong with this one? It’s old but dead stone reliable, cheap to run and fun in the corners (had some suspension upgrades. I was planning on keeping it until the engine blew or tranny went, and even then I would probably keep it as a project car but now I’m not sure if I should go look for another (30% likely), consider fixing it (20% likely) or buy a different make of car (30%likely) with 10% of me unsure of anything.

I’m crushed and clueless but now the time begins to figure out what’s next. While I wasn’t active much on this board (life’s been crazy) I enjoyed all the help you guys offered and the humor always kept me reading every post even on topics that didn’t particularly interest me.

Oh and for all you guys that have intakes, buy an intake bypass valve. I never imagined myself being in this position but I’m sure it would’ve helped a little bit even though it seems as though I have electrical & engine issues now anyway.

ouch. got full coverage?

Nope just liability. I’d part it out but nowhere to store it.

damn thats tough to hear.
show us some pics of the damage.
i would probably still fix and keep my teg if it was set on fire and then thrown into a lake.

I’m highly considering it since the body is fairly clean but electrical issues are a bitch to solve. I’ve put my fair share of money into it and it’s hard to just let that go.

Maybe I will save up over the winter and restore it slowly. I’m not sure if I’m ready to shift over to the 3rd gen teg’s either.

damn dude that sux hard. i cant even imagine what i would do. Im just suprised ur not killing somebody or the car lol. Damn i love DA’s but damn that sounds like the best plan would be to lick ur wounds call it a day and start a new project. I can only imagine what it would cost to repair whatever damage was done. Probly more than youll ever get back. But whatever u do good luck

Sorry to hear your bad luck. You may want to see how bad the damage is before writing it off. It could just need to dry out a bit. Maybe some electrical component shorted out perhaps? You should try the insurance route if you can first. Good luck.

My hat’s off to you, sir, for your boundless enthusiasm!

:up::up:

Ok so we removed most of the water from the engine (took out spark plugs and cranked engine) and that got rid of the horrible banging noise. Purchased a few new parts in the process mainly new spark plugs and wires. I’ve had the car for 4 years and never changed the distributor but we tested it by removing the cap to see if it’s spinning and it does.

The engine cranks freely, I have fuel going but somewhere along the line I’m not getting spark. Should I chalk it up to a bad ecu or think about replacing the distributor?

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Also the check engine light cycles like normal so it’s not throwing any codes.

I’ve read that a bad ground from the thermostat housing could stop it from starting. Any truth to that?

Some things I’ve already checked include battery terminals, fuel pump, starter, spark plugs and spark plug wires.

A new distributor will include many of the ignition parts that could cause your no spark symptoms. I recently had to replace mine for other reasons - but if you’re on your original distributor, then it wouldn’t hurt changing it out. (it was fairly easy to replace - used Dist. King - lifetime warr.) Unfortunately the water could have shorted out other circuit boards too though. A burnt coil has those symptoms - turns over but no spark to the plugs.

I only have the weekends free to work on the car so when the distributor came in on Friday I was excited to get to work

The distributor was the culprit for the most part. Turns out the auto zone plugs I picked up were rather crappy as well so I need to exchange those.

Good news is that it actually runs…albeit on 3 cylinders (getting a misfire) but I drove it home yesterday and what a sweet drive it was.

Cleaned up a few parts in the engine yesterday cause it was idling rough and discovered that with the intake off it will idle normally but with the intake on the car shuts off.

Planning on cleaning the AEM dryflow filter today cause it’s probably clogged with debris. Hoping it’s just the filter causing issues.

Good to hear she is still alive
