Well the time has come to lower my ride, the stock look isn’t for me anymore plus my stock shocks are no longer any good.
The car is a 92, 2 door mostly stock (for now). I will be using the car everyday for daily driving and i drive pretty hard. I want a smooth ride that has minimal gap between the wheel and the whell well.Is not bumpy at all but will get me through the tight corners. Toronto roads are pretty rough too.
I have been quoted the following (all prices are in canadian)
$220 tax in for TEIN STECH with a 2" DROP
Rear camber kit $80 a side
Tokico HP SHOCKS $350 for the set
or Neuspeed and H&R for a 1.8 drop for around the same price
Another option based on the reccomendation of G2IC members…
OMNI POWER COILOVERS… The porblem with that is the price is $800
Is it worth the extra $330?
With a 2" drop do i need front and rear camber kits?
Can i just get the front and do the washer trick for the rear?
What should i go with?
What i really want to know is what my options are so far what i have listed above is really all i know about.
I read that spring rate determines the type of ride i get. Does anyone know of a website or a write up where i can compare everything from spring rate to cost so that i can pic what will be the best for me?
I think you’re comparing apples to oranges. The Tokico HP’s are cheap shocks. They won’t last all that long with a 1.8-2" drop. Meanwhile, the Omnipower coilovers are one package, so they should last a very long time. You’d also get adjustable height with the omnipowers. Get a price on the following… I think it’s a better comparison, and then you’ll see why the Omnipowers are a good deal:
I’m running Tein S Techs on my commuter teg with GR2s. The ride is comparable to stock. It does bottom out at times. Definately not a harsh ride due to the soft spring rate.
I like the way my car rides and looks, but if I could get a do over on my commuter teg, I probably would have spent the extra cash and gone with the Omnipower coilovers or Tein Basics. I like that fact that I don’t have to mess with strut caps on the Omnipowers (I’m lazy).
If price is you’re main determining factor, the you’d probably be happy with the HP / Tein set up. If you search the different suspension threads, you’ll find people who have run with that set up for a while.
However if you’re looking for something that would improve the handling of your car, then I’d go with a higher end set up. It’s better to pay for something once if you’re after performance.
When i first got into suspension, like you i wanted springs because of the lower price…“advice” get the Omni’s! Canada right!?..one word ?!WINTER!? you will be kickin urself in the ass when winter comes and ur car is a snowplow with around a 2" drop. maybe you have a winter beater who knows? would you still like the adjustability from the omni’s to go stiff for your “spirited” driving and soft for a weekend date? of course you would. and another word of advice if you look for tein springs…the proof is in the spring rates… softer than stock with more of a drop!? can you say bottom out…
i got skunk2 lowering springs for my 91, and i couldnt possibly be happier. I got about a 2.5 inch drop out of the kit. i payed $250 on the springs and got KYB GR2 struts for $200. I still need a camber kit for front and rear, but the skunk2’s kick ass so far. Mine have been in for over a year.
Eibach street kit (2+ in drop), with kyb AGX or Koni Yellow
I have the eibach pro kit(1.5 in drop), cuz I didnt want to have to buy a camber kit and AGX shocks, I love the way it turned out and I payed 550 US from Erin in the spnsors forum, dont know if she ships to Canada though.
i had tokiko blues and neuspeed sports on my old g2=the ride was good but that smooth n the drop was pretty good too 1.8"
now on my ne wg2 i got tokiko blues and h&r sports=the only diference is that its a smoother ride but it doesnt drop as much…im considering getin the tein s tech springs to go lower
You said in your first post that you “drive hard.” I dont know what you mean by that but i drive my car hard and that means not spending any time going around potholes or driving slow because the road is a little bumpy. Im not saying if there’s a huge pothole i wont slow down and go around it but i’m talking about normal potholes. I drove a lowered car on Tein Basic setup and it was horrible. The quality of the ride is perfect and takes turns nice but it is still a lowered car and it cannot be driven like a normal car without the consequences. Take into account the camber kit for the front and this adds up to a lot of money which could be going somewhere else in your car like your engine. In my opinion leave it stock or don’t go past 1.5" if you drive hard. If you can compromise driving style for a lowered look then go ahead with the drop.
Intrax super sport lowering lowering springs and GR2’s are working like a stock setup on my friend’s 92 teg. He has had no problems driving in the winter so far. But winter is gone!!! Thank God. (At least here).
