Need Advice

Everyone I need some advice. I recently accepted a job that is going to require me to drive 75 miles one way to work (about 35,000 miles a year). I currently have a 2009 INFINITI G37s that I love. I currently owe a little over 19k on the car it’s got 49,000 miles on it and it’s in like new condition. Book trade on it is around 22k.

What I need advice/opinions on is should I keep the INIFINTI and put the miles on it or should I get out of it now and get a cheaper car (under 10k)? I have been looking at cars and of course nothing compares to the infinity but you can see the ones I’ve been looking at in the links below

Keep the Infiniti. Don’t put the miles on it if you LOVE THIS CAR MORE THAN ANYTHING. Just park it and make the payments on it.

Use $4,000 on some decent gas sipper and buy it outright off CL.

Not an option I have too many cars but none better than the INFINITI for the drive. I either drive the INFINITI or trade it in. I should note this drive will only be for a year hopefully.

The way I look at it, (from experience, I use to drive the entire lower 50 for a job years ago) if you’re going to be spending a lot of time driving a car, why not do it in one you love? I mean, what’s the fun in buying a shitty car when you’re going to be doing a lot of driving? Enjoy your time.

Which I understand and I want what I don’t want is to find out I need a new car in a year or two (or ever before it’s paid off) and be upside down on it. I currently owe almost 20k on the car and book value is around 21.5-22k but if I put 35k miles on it the value takes a big hit down to 17k ish. That is why i’m torn. I wouldn’t part with the car if it wasn’t for this drive.

I guess it’s different for me since I always keep my cars for the long-haul so I’m not afraid of diminished value from miles. I’ve only had 2 primary cars for myself (my G2 and my current DB8) and I’m 28. I’ve owned and sold many more for profit and upgrading the wife’s/Family car.

I keep cars for long term to but fixing a G2 is far different from fixing a G37 due to the electronics and parts cost.

Hate to break it to you bud - but you are already upside down.

this +1. Car could book at a million six its only worth what someone is willing to pay.

i would get rid of the infiniti and pick up something reliable and relatively easy on gas. I’ve done 100+ mi/day and it sucked. Got out of that job once i picked up a car i cared about.

If you end up getting a used car, a 02-05 civic is super reliable. It was what I used while doing most of the miles. All it needs is gas, oil, and tires (and other consumables). If your company pays for mileage, you should maximize that reimbursement by using a car that is cheap to drive. I think I actually made money with the mileage rate.

They don’t pay for mileage. I think i’m just going to keep the INFINTI the guys at the nissan forums say it’s super reliable and shouldn’t give me any problems.

TDi. Mine gets 55+ mpg on the highway.

Start making double payments. If you aren’t making more money to drive that far, why are you working there?

Good luck. Gas is probably cheaper in Florida than in SoCal but I would dislike paying for gas more than once a week. My TL can get 35 mpg if I do 60, but i’m not sure if the G37 can break 30 at its best.

Even if I had your TL i’d need over a 19 gallon fuel tank to not fill up more than once a week. My G will get around 25-27 probably.

I’m going to go test drive this one today to see what I think http://www.davidmausvwnorth.com/used/Volkswagen/2006-Volkswagen-Jetta+Sedan-bedc90090a0a006501844fbebe0cfb10.htm

Pure highway in the z, being a good boy, I can hit 29. I usually hover around 22ish though. Cause I have a hard time not having fun in it.

Thats not a bad deal on that jetta. 90k is broken in and ready for use.

I use to commute about the same distance when I lived in Jersey each day for work… you couldn’t have gotten me to part with my mazdaspeed protege’ even though it sucked on gas mileage it was still a car that I loved to drive and considering all of the work I had done to it (upgraded turbo and what not) it was still a reliable fun car. I say keep the infiniti… hell I just talked my girlfriend out of selling hers.

Alright decision has been made I’m keeping the INFINITI and either driving it or buying a $2,000 beater if the wife will let me

good deal.
