NEED HELP! bad idle problem

hey everyone. i am in need of help really bad.

me and my brother have been trying to figure out wtf is wrong with his car for over 2 or so weeks now and are getting very frustrated.

okay so here is the problem.

my brother sprayed starting fluid into his 91 rs and the first time he did it, it worked great. he decided to do it a second time and then the car was stuck at 2000rpm. very frustrating. he took off his throttle body and cleaned it. adjusted the intake valve. a few machanic told him it could be his radiator fluid and tubing, so he replaced it all. a buddy of mines told us to try and clean the IACV, he did it to his d16z6 coupe and his rpm problem was resolved.

the problem hasn’t been delt with but just today the car started to idle up and down at 1000rpm and 1500rpm. it’s really annoying. he has spent about $100 on the previous problem already. he has also done many other things to it hoping to resolve the problem, nothing has helped out at all.

i am really hoping someone can help me figure it out, don’t want to spend hundreds of dollars just to figure out this problem. and it would cost more money if taken to a shop.

thanks for looking.

does it constantly fluctuate or does it stop after its warmed up and what originally made you guys spray starter fluid into the throttle body.

usually the first thing you wanna do is check for codes.
if none consist, check for vacuum leaks.
it could be your fitv is malfunctioning, sending an inaccurate signal to the pcm

that’s probably the order i’d go in

i have no idea why my brother decided to do that in the first place. but it was the cause of the problem though. even when it is warmed up it still idles.

sorry welfare, i am a newbie with cars, all i know is the basics and is still learning. so idk wat u mean. where do i check for the codes, where should i check for the vacuum leaks, and wat is the fitv?

sorry, for the dumb questions and please be patient with me i am still learning.

oh, cleaning the throttle body did bring back the whistle from the intake. sounds beautiful now. idk wat my brother has done with his car but the idling has gone away by cleaning the IACV and adjusting it with L wrentch. he says it has power loss. i don’t understand why or how, though. since the problem is sorta “solved” for now. i think this can turn into a learning experience.

anyone know why the car has power loss now?
