Need help obd0 b16a or obd1 b18b

Okay I’ve been searching around for some info on either of these and haven’t found exact info. I’m looking at two different motors from Honda Motors Online, The B18B 94-97 (LS) Long Block or B16A 88-91 (SiR I) Long Block.

The B18B comes with

  • Motor
  • Intake Manifold
  • Exhaust Manifold
  • Injectors
  • Fuel Rail
  • Throttle body
  • Alternator
  • Distributor

so as far as i could find all that would have to be done is rewire the distributor and fuel injectors.

The B16A comes with

  • Motor
  • Intake Manifold
  • Exhaust Manifold
  • Injectors
  • Fuel Rail
  • Throttle body

so i would have to get a distributor or cut my current one and add the wires for vtec and the extra o2 sensor.

I’m wondering which would be the better swap, I’m not looking for something super fast but something to replace my blown b18a in my DD.

What would I have to do to swap either one?

Also I will be using my stock A1 transmission and i know that it isn’t well suited for the longer geared transmission but I’m not worried about that right now. Which clutch do I have to use the one specific to my transmission?

  1. Read the engine swap guide in the teg tips. Then read it again. Then read it again. It’s vital info. But be aware it was created BEFORE OBD0->OBD1 swaps existed.

  2. You do not need to convert to OBD1 to run that b18b. Read the engine swap guide. Thus no need to do anything with the injectors or distributor. Read the engine swap guide.

  3. You do not want to use an A1 transmission with that b16a. The b16a, and any vtec engine for that matter, should be paired with a short geared transmission (one of the ones which Honda originally paired with a vtec engine). Long gears on a vtec motor is going to suck, especially with a b16a. I would actually suggest you run a short geared trans even if you keep a non-vtec engine. I’ve had a short geared YS1 paired to a b18a in one of my DA’s for years now - I’d never want to go back to the longer transmission.

  4. You purchase your clutch for the transmission NOT the engine. All 89-91 b series transmissions are the same in regard to the clutch. All 92+ b series transmissions are the same in regard to the clutch. Need clarification? SEARCH. This topic has been covered THOUSANDS of times.
