Need help

What’s up everyone?

I have been having overheating issues lately on my 93 1.8. Most of my hoses were soggy because the car sat for 4 years. After replacing the bad ones, I still had the same issue. The car is leaking coolant from somewhere and I wasn’t able to determine where it was coming from. Frustrated, I took it to a shop and they told me that they don’t know where the leak is coming from and that they’d have to take out the engine to find it. I am not a moron so I took my car and went home. They did tell me, however, that the leak is coming from somewhere between the oil filter and the head gasket, but that it doesn’t appear to be coming from the head gasket.

This leads me to believe that the metal coolant system pipe that goes along the back of the engine (which is really rusty) is the culprit. I am thinking that maybe it has a pin hole in it or something and that is where my coolant keeps leaking from. Does that pipe have a name that any of you know of or do you know where I could find one? I looked on ebay and found some results but wasn’t exactly sure if it was the correct part and didn’t want to waste my money on the wrong thing. Any and all help would be appreciated, I am well beyond frustrated at this point.

Thanks everyone,
John

I assume you’re talking about part #15? If so, there’s the price for the local dealer, and the (cheaper) online price.

I don’t know how the Honda scene in NJ is, but here I could find one used for pretty cheap just by asking around.

I think its called a water neck. There are 2 o-rings on there (water pump and by the thermostat) & a small hose.
But you gotta send it to a shop who can “pressure test” the system to find the leak.

Yep, it’s part #15, you guys rock! Thanks for the help!! The Honda scene is huge in NJ. Unfortunately, I am no longer there and am stuck in Arizona. There’s not even any good junk yards around here that I know of. In NJ U-Pull Its were everywhere. I’m going to just order it from that website…again, thanks for your help!!

As stated, get the two o-rings (one for each end) as well and you should be good to go.

Wow! Pull your engine to find a coolant leak? That’s crazy!

Thank you guys for your help! I ordered the part, but I want to make sure before I start tearing this thing down…does anybody know if this part can be installed without taking off either the water pump or the thermostat housing? Just want to know what I’m looking at. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
John

You can install it without removing the water pump. But the thermostat housing has to be removed in order to fit the part in and seat the gaskets properly.

Truth. Pull the thermo housing, the coolant line(s) from the actual metal tube you’re replacing… then pull the tube out of the block.

Re-install.

Crack a beer, and enjoy a leak-free motor.

If the pipe is THAT rusty to where it has made a hole in the water pipe, I’d flush the system after re-installing everything. Dont want rusty deposites in your motor.

Alright, I’m gonna give it a whirl. Is the thermo housing a pain to get off?

Not too bad. Take off the intake tube to get better access.
