The car was idling at a low RPM (always under a grand, around 500-200) so i changed the spark plugs (put in new NGK platinums), wires (Blue Thunder), and distributor cap.
When trying to take out the rotor at the same time i was changing the cap, i broke the leak cover (on the inside of the cap, just behind the rotor). It let me work with the rotor screw better. eventually i gave up on getting the rotor out, since the screw was in so tight. we never got it out, we tried everything. tried backing it out, and all that. we finally stripped the screw head so i think we’re gonna have to get a whole new piece. i kinda chipped the rotor too while doing this.
after i changed the wires out the car wouldn’t start very well but when it started up it idled beautifully. about 1-1.5 RPM. So i drove it today and now it’s starting to idle REALLY low. It even died on me at a stop sign.
i think it’s most likely the rotor, but i wanted to get another opinion since after i changed the plugs it idled great, but two days later it doesn’t.
also, the engine gets REALLY hot. like untouchable hot, but it’s not smoking yet. any ideas?
I just went and started it again after it had time to cool down a little and it idles consistantly at like 600. It’s below 1000 but at least it’s consistant. Now to change that damn rotor…
I’m not sure how it’s supposed to idle. I was kinda wondering that myself, cuz when I first changed the plugs I thought that a little over a grand was normal.
It is supposed to idle at 500-750 when warm anyway, i don’t see the problem…you should try adjusting you idle screw if you want it a little bit higher…it idles higher when you strat the car because the engine needs to be warmed up. And when you drive for a while and you engine is cool enough to touch, you must have found some new revolutionary technology and youo should patent it…yah…
