need you guys to find the problem

Here are the symptoms-
Grayish smoke coming out above 5000RPM (puffs of smoke)
black soot on my bumper, and on taillight
loss of power

need help with problem, don’t have any way to do a leak down test, and haven’t done compression test yet.

Thanks:up:

time to rebuild or swap a B16A2

wow how informative! thank you, now I will put 2 grand out of my ass and do that:D

thats a tough one. are you getting black specs all over the rear bumper? Your problem sounds EXACTLY like what my car is doing, and my motor is freshly rebuilt. The problem with my motor is that its running really rich, i just haven’t figured out why.

give us some more info and we’ll try and work something out (however if you’re running rich you may be sol when it comes to getting any help, i haven’t been able to get too much help on my problem…but then again i think mine is an anomoly).

answer these:
-what motor
-how many miles
-ALL of your mods (please include any mods to the fuel system, ecu…everything)
-what kind of gas mileage are you getting?
-and lastly is there anything you can think of that could be the cause? did you do any work on the car recently before it started blowing the smoke? or did it come completely out of no where?

  1. stock B18a
  2. w/156,000 miles
  3. just an intake
  4. I am honestly not keeping track, but I know that it isn’t the best
  5. I was driving away from school and someone told me. So I had my dad drive my car, and behind me, and it’s kind of gray/white smoke. completely out of no where.

Thanks 91IntegGS, your a big help:up:

black soot on my rear bumper and tail-lights also…and I believe i m running very rich also, but cant get it down even with fpr. Perhaps it’s time for a vtec controller =)

well, unfortunately i don’t know how much help i can be. this problem seems similar to mine but there are no seeming reasons for yours.

the confusing part is that you said its “gray/white” smoke. here is what the smoke colors mean:
white = water/coolant (would indicate head gasket leak)
blue = oil
black = fuel

now i wouldn’t say that the smoke from my car is black either, sort of described it as a grayish color as well (something in between black and blue). but my mechanic told me for sure that its fuel because i’m running so rich. so, my best guess without seeing the soot on your bumper is that you’re running rich.

Potential reasons for running rich:
-raised fuel pressure. since your fuel delievery is stock i wouldn’t think this would be the case. but the stock fpr can be damaged and cause pressure to go up.

-faulty injectors. I believe its possible for injectors to break and flow too much fuel. As of now i think this is my problem.

-faulty ecu. There is always a chance that the ecu is telling the injectors to give more fuel. This is probably unlikely though, i’ve never heard of an ecu going bad like this…but anything is possible.

-Bad O2 sensor. Its possible that the O2 sensor is giving bad readings to the ecu and therefore dumping extra fuel.

Those are all the things i can think of that it could be. If you had other mods then there would be other more obvious things to check…but considering the motor is stock… Of course there could be things in addition to what i lised. I’m still trying to work through my problem so obviously i don’t have all the answers.

good luck man!

I will be checking the o2 sensor, but could the smoke, and soot on the muffler tip/bumper could be burning oil?

Thansk man:up: you have been good help!

well, if its bluish smoke then yeah, it could be oil. and a little bit of oil smoke from an older motor isn’t that uncomon, it just depends on condition of the rings and valve seals. However the soot sounds a lot more like fuel to me…at least thats what i’ve gathered in doing research trying to fix my problem. I was told that the little black specs are bits of unburnt fuel, no one mentioned that oil could do the same thing.

I wish i could be of more help.

Your Knowledge has helped me a bunch, and it’s not you fault for not knowing, if I figure out my problem I will tell you:up:

Thanks!
