Need your guys opinions

I would like your guys input and advice on my current situation.
Alright so my DA has 251,XXX and has a blown head gasket. So I did a compression test and the results are as follows Cyl1:150 Cyl2:140 Cyl3:145 Cyl4:160. Now this is where you guys come in. I was thinking was just replacing the head gasket and putting a B18b headthat I have or considering the milage on the car replacing the rings, pistons well an entire rebuild. Now I would rebuild it just stock. I want a reliable car for everyday. I was thinking of a rebuild because I wouldn’t want something like the rings going out 5-10 thousand miles later and all for nothing.
I have the money for fixing the head gasket but not the rebuild. So what would you guys do? should I wait and save?
Well let me know, thanks.

My opinion is just change the head gasket. My car has 220k miles on it and it getting to the point where i need to replace my head gasket. As long as there are no other problems like knocking and lot of blow by then you wont need to replace the pistons and rings. Honda motors can last forever on most the original parts as long as you don’t act like a street racer and do hard takeoff’s and rev at high rpm’s all the time.

Are rings fairly easy to replace? If so I would do that as well. That’s what killed my last motor. Maybe even valve seals as well then you know you are good to go for many more miles to come.

Basically do the most that you can afford.

I would just get another engine. You could find a used one for around $400. Maybe even swap a b20 in. You could one of those for around $500 and they swap right in no problem.

^^then he’s got a used motor w/out new head gasket/ t-belt.
just change the head gasket, t-belt, water pump. if the cam and crank seals look dry, leave them. if not, do them too. just have the head resurfaced and pressure tested.
basically, if it aint broke, don’t fix it. if you’re not getting blow by or blowing blue, leave the rings.
that’s my opinion

i say just buy another motor when my head gasket went out at 170xxx miles i replace my motor with a b20 i paid 500 for it and another 70 or 80 for front and rear motor mounts and gave it a oil change now i have a good daily car for another couple years

By the time he spends all the money to do that, he could have bought another motor and been done with it. Plus all the work to take the head off, getting it resurfaced, putting the head back on, lining the timing belt up perfect with the cams, and then doing a valve lash adjustment on 16 valves. When he can go buy another motor throw the clutch and tranny on and throw it back in the car and not have to worry whether or not he did everything that needed to be done to fix his engine. These engines are cheap and while you have a bad one pulled out, why not throw another one in.

i would swap in a new motor. you"ll save yourself more money in the long run and pick something up with less mileage on it

personally, i’d be a lot happier knowing what has and hasn’t been done. i really don’t see how swapping the motor is feasible in comparison to doing a head gasket (in both time and money). not to mention, just dumping your old motor when it’s easily fixed is a real wasteful way of thinking, IMO

If you have the tools and knowledge to swap the engine, do that. Like everyone else has mentioned, get a b20 for cheap and drop it in… It’ll get you going for a while… If you don’t want to feel wasteful, rebuild the b18 you took out and either sell it or keep it incase you cook your b20…
