needle breakage

i broke the gas needle and the temp needle while trying to put in my reverse indiglo, what should i do and what can happen?

Those needles aren’t supposed to come off. You can even damage the gauge by just tugging on them too hard. Replace both gauges. When you’re putting on gauge faces you DO NOT remove the needles. Simply slip the needle through the hole in the center of the gauge, then slide the gauge down to the base of the needle…

The needles are supposed to come off, that it how they work on the gauge clusters when they need serviced.

Use a “pick” set to take the needles off, I have done it at least 30 times in many different cars for customers. The only way you can’t take the needles off is if they are “pressed” on by machine which the DA clusters are not.

Alot of gauge sets you DO need to remove the needles for installations, especailly the gauge that replace the existing stock gauges.

If you do break a needle you are pretty much screwed though. You should look on ebay for a cluster… I see them on there all the time for $5-$20.

I guess I should have clarified… but aren’t supposed to be taken off if all you need to do is install new gauge face overlays. I’ve yet to see a set of gauge faces where the needles need to be removed, but I’m guessing you’ve seen more than me since you say there are some where the needles need to be removed. And I haven’t seen aftermarket gauge faces that are not overlays (in otherwords they actually replace the face of the gauge).

The factory temp and gas needles can not be removed without breaking the guages on our cars. I have some extra guages at the house if you are interested please email me and we can work out a price. They are $54.00 each from Acura, I’ll sell shipped for much, much less.

They come off the same as the tach and MPH gauge do, they aren’t on there any different, just be careful.

No they don’t. I can speak from experience. I broke 6 guages trying to install my first set of white face guages back in 96 before they made the slip over the needle type faces.

Then you must not have had a good pick set. I have 3 da’s and all 3 of their instrument clusters have been taken apart at one time or another.

disassembling a cluster is no problem I’ve done it dozens of times. The needles will come off of the tach and speedo , but not the gas and temp guages.

i hate to resurrect this topic but it’s the only one i could find that is informative to take the needles off… are you guys talking about lock picks or what kind of pics are you talking about… i’ve tried taking the speedo needle off my jdm cluster but it won’t budge… tried using tiny screw drivers
