New and full of questions

Hello fellow G2ers, I recently purchased an Aztec Green GSR and have many questions.
1: Are any of you located near Portland, Or
2: I think I might be rebuilding my b17 soon, so my question is…should I stick with the stock block, or should I go with a b20 block?
3: I’m considering purchasing Koni yellows and Ground Control coilovers. Have any of you had any experience with this setup. Also is there a less expensive setup that is similar in performance to that setup?

Much appreciated,

Shey

Welcome, Shey!

To start answering your questions…

1) I’m located in Seattle, WA (and there is a huge number of G2er’s up here) but I know for a fact that there is a good number of people in OR as well.
2) Switching from the stock B17A1 block to a B20 block is really your personal preference. Personally, I would keep the B17 block and rebuild it just because they’re becoming less and less common and it would retain some of the GSR’s “roots.” Swapping to a B20 block will definitely change your motor setup though, kind of like an LS/VTEC setup. I can’t give too much information on this simply because I haven’t ever done an LS/V or B20/V setup but I’m sure plenty of guys can chime in on this.
3) I can probably assist you the most for this question as I currently have the Koni Yellow/Ground Control coilover setup on my DA. I personally love it, it suits my car very well. I also have all four Ground Control extended top hats which lengthen the strut travel a good amount. Adjustability and dampening on the Koni Yellows are good, but not as extensive as other coilovers, like APEXi (which can get very pricey). As for the Ground Control coilover sleeves, you choose your own spring rate. It’s very customizable if you know what you want. It’ll run you around $800 to $1200 depending on what you get, and who you order it through. Other comparable coilovers are Function & Form (Type 1, Type 2 and Type 2.5), Skunk2 (Pro-S and Pro-C), and more. It really depends on your price range.

Hope this helps get you started!

if i were you i would rebuild the b17 block and stick it in your closet for a rainy day or just to keep it. If there were two identical GS-Rs and one had the O.G. block and the other was a b20v i would buy the one with the OG block. Even if they were the same price… Actually even if the b20 was built and super fast lol. I would do this just for resale value. but b20v is not a bad idea. i have a b20v set up in my 4dr. things i would suggest to do if you decide to go b20

  1. Arp head studs
  2. ARP rod bolts
  3. ACL or standard bearings (crank/main)
  4. Hasting Piston rings (if you can find them)

If your looking for a stock b20V build that will be bullet proof. if i were you, and really wanted to do CRVtec, i would save my block and rebuild it over time. just my .o2

Post some pics of your CAR!

Hello and welcome.

  1. I live in Portland and its nice to see another member from here. I know of atleast two more people from here but I don’t think there are too many more.

  2. I was thinking about a b20 but that’s when I didnt have a motor at all. I bought a B16 and I would build the B17 if I were you.

  3. can’t help you on this one since I have never had the GC/koni set up but I have always thought about it.

hello welcome g2ic.

  1. I dont live there but I will be doing some fire fighting up there in a month and I will have my gsr crvtec up there with me. But I have seen a bunch of guys post from up there.

  2. Rebuild the b17a1 just for the fact that specific engine is becoming very rare to find. you can always tuck it away for a rainy day or if you want to make a few bucks you could always sell it down the line.

  3. I also can’t help you out on this one I do know for a fact that there are a number of members running that setup that will chime in with some in put for you.

I’m in Salem. I have a white 92 Db2 so I say rock the original b17. I used to run ground control tokico set up on mine before I bought coilovers. They are ok but the ride can be a bit bouncy. I say pay a little extra and get some coilovers. If you do the facebook thing check out a group called 2nd gen integra club. You can always find things for sale on there as well as this site. All of us here in the northwest should plan some meets sometime!

Hey Guys,

than you so much for all your help and info. I’m still not sure if I’m going to do the B20 build or just rebuild the B17. In regards to the suspension, I’ve decided to go with Skunk2 springs and tokico illuminas. On another topic, I need to repaint my GSR, but I don’t have a lot of $$$. So…my question is…do any of you know someone in the PDX area that does good work, but at a reasonable price?

At art93DA: When will you be in town?

Oh…and here are some pics:

Thanks again,

Another thing…I added a new headunit, 1000 watt amp, and a 10’ sub. While doing that, I added all new 8 and 4 AWG wire throughout the car. I wanted to get it lowered sooner, but I had a few mechanical problems that needed to be tended to, which meant no money for upgrades. Oh…and while my car was at the shop, someone stole my GSR emblem. This is not a big deal, but they scratched my paint while removing it.

Bummer!! Damn thieves!!

I know…

On a good note, I found someone is in Washington who is going to sell me his Tein SS Coilovers for $550 + my old shocks/springs!

I have to check in I think to my station by June 17. but I will be in enterprise. Oh man the db2 is sexy

ive been looking for a deal like that for a hot minute. Good find!!! No more 4x4 mode lol.

Update: I bought the Energy Suspension Master Bushing Kit. I also will be picking up the new suspension this weekend. Now for what I think is the bad news; I’ve been going through about 1 qt of oil every two weeks. I replaced the valve gasket and cam seals when the timing belt was replaced. the only area that looks to be losing oil is the oil pan. However, I don’t imagine that I could lose that much from the leak in the oil pan. I also noticed my tailpipe turning black, but haven’t seen any smoke. Could I be burning oil…or could the leaky oil pan be the culprit?

Along that same line of thinking…how much should I expect to pay to rebuild the B17?
