Hi all, I just want to say I am not car stupid, but right now i feel as though I am. I have a fresh b16a swap in my 93 g2. It had a b18 distributor on it, was throwing code 9, wouldn’t go past a certain RPM, so I tested the components. Go figure, the ignition coil AND the cyp were faulty, so I ordered a new one. It just came in today, and in the midst of my excitement, it now wont start. It is getting spark. I checked and re-checked. It will start for a few seconds, occasionally and will die. Now, I don’t know, maybe I re installed the distributor wrong, because I have read (believe it or not) that cylinder 1 has to be TDC. I’m hoping maybe by a strike of luck someone has had a similar issue and can maybe guide me. Yes, the main relay is good. Yes the injectors pulse. Yes it gets spark. It starts occasionally.
The dist is on in the right position, right? You’re supposed to only be able to install it one way, but I have seen people install it 180deg off and just not realize that the dist isn’t making full contact with the head. Assuming the dist is working, and you’re getting GOOD spark, then the logical thing to try next is to check for fuel. It’s not uncommon to be working on one problem only for a second, unrelated, issue to pop up and cause great confusion. It old be the dist, but if you’ve checked everything in the ignition system and it checks out then logic tells us to start looking for other sources to the problem.
I haven’t checked timing. Don’t you love how cars do that? Have one issue then another. Ill check timing and fuel pressure today, as well as compression. With it starting then dying sometimes I’m really leaning towards a fuel issue. I hope at least.
I agree with Colin, as dumb as it may sound I would check and make sure the distributor is installed correctly. 180 out would still fire occasionally as the cylinder loaded up with fuel and then die out within a few cycles due to the timing being so far off
Well I got it running. The new distributor was poorly machiend* so the fin things that go in the cam were grinded down completly. Basically took the new icm put it in the old distributor and fired right up.
