New Clutch.. :(

Hey, I have a 91 RS… my clutch started slipping the other day when I was going up a steep hill…
I am needing to find out if it is very easy to replace if I bought a clutch kit from a local parts store. They run around $200… Or should I take it to the shop and get charged freekin $575? HELP! :frowning:
Please reply with past experince so I can know if I want to do it or if I want the shop to do it. My dad told me he could provide help if I needed it… Thx…

it is definately not easy to replace a clutch, thats why they charge so much for labor. it takes a long time to do, maybe an entire day of work. when my clutch on my 90 LS started slipping and i mean slipping bad, i just adjusted the pedal by loosening a certain nut and now the clutch catches fine.

what kinda slipping do you mean
i know after my car has been running for a while if i floor it the needle flys past what it should be, is this the same symptom you had? if so what bolt can I adjust?
Thanks
JAY

I dunno if you all have this problem, and if I am the only one, I guess I am a freek…but anyway…
When I am driving my car (usually 65-75 miles a day), I notice once the engine has gone for a while without a break (meaning it being off for >10 minutes) the clutch starts to act up. I dunno how to explain it, but I will try…
After getting off the highway (I usually go 75-80 mph average), I notice the clutch doesn’t like to catch like it does when the engine is just warming up or when it is warm but not hot… It is like it takes the engine longer to catch the gear… … How can I tell if my clutch is bad or if I need to adjust my cable? Thanks in advance for your responses.

exact same problem that I am having.
I would also like to know if this can be fixed by adjusting a cable
(I just replaced my clutch 35,000 mi ago, honda oem clutch)

well i can send you some pictures of the bolt that adjusts the clutch pedal. as far as i know, my car has 157k miles with the original clutch and when it started catching gears real high and slipping badly, i just adjusted this bolt and now its great. email me and i’ll send you some pics

Mine started to slip a little when I hit 140,000 on the original clutch. I adjusted it(prolly a little too much) and now it grabs fine again. Be glad you have a cable transmission, the 92 and up tegs have hyrdo trannys and are noit adjustable like the clutch ones are. The bolt you are looking for is going to be on the left side of the motor…underneath the big radiator hose the goes the the left side of the block. You can just follow the cable line from clutch to the tranny and you’ll see it. It basically a large plastic nut that can be turned. If it has never been adjusted, the nut will be at the bottom of the threaded part, and thus if it’s at the top of the threaded part, you’re out of adjustment and need a new clutch. If you’ve never adjusted it, it may take a some force to get it to turn. The big plastic adjuster nut looks more like a gear acutally. It has indentions on the side that lock it in place via a small rubber stopper on the cable. It will be obvious if you get a good look at it. To adjust it, turn it counterclockwise…that will move it towards the top of the threads. You’ll just have to do ti by trial. A few good turns may do it, but it may take several times of you turning it some and checking the pedal and how the clutch grabs.
Here’s a link to a manual that someone put online…just make sure that you have Adobe Acrobat reader so you can view the file.
G2 Helms Manual
Hopefully this will help you out. Pages 12-3 through 12-5 of the Clutch section are good blown-up diagrams of the adjustment piece and tell how to and how much to adjust it.I believe the manual says not to have more than like an inch or so of pedal freeplay, so don’t over-adjust it. let us know if we can help you any more!

You mean 94 and right???

no i think 90 and 91 were cable, then 92 started with the hydro right?

All stock 90-93s have cable transmissions. I think the B16a1 is a cable (don’t know about B16a2).

Yea, umm, My clutch started slipping moderately at 168,000. I knew i was going to have to replace it ($650) So as i was driving to work one day it started buffeting and whenever i would step on the gas it would jerk hard left and i would have to fight the wheel. It turned out that the clutch had started to chatter and from that it damaged the main drive line. to make a long story short, $1000 in repairs. Just a warning. btw, i drive a 90 gs. See ya.

what if I just want to decrease the amount of freeplay? I have a problem with the clutch engaging waaaaaay up high. Like I can idle in first gear with the clutch half down without stalling. It sucks when i’m at the track, cuz it seems like it never disengages all the way. Does the adjusting nut make the clutch engage earlier? if so I really wanna try it.

yeah, adjusting the clutch pedal will make the clutch engage much lower, if you adjust it so.

if ur gears are grinding, just change the tranny =o) much cheaper

no. 90-91 = cable 92-93 to present = hydro

Ok … all 90-93 tegs have cable tranny’s…94 and up is when they went to hydro…

Ok I adjusted the cable and the clutch to seems to have stopped slipping, this is very good news!! anyway I think it still need some fine tuning. Il save that for another day

Thanks
JAY!

good to hear

ok, the clutch seems to be working fine. But when I tap on the clutch pedal lightly with my foot it has some play, should I tighten the nut or loosen it?
thanks
JAY

i would say try tightening it and see how that feels. maybe you over loosened it? i just kept adjusting it until i liked it.
