Whatsup all. I have a new DA…my red one was stolen. Anyway, its low mileage, around 60k, with stage one cams and bolt ons…now comes the question…I had a b16 in my RS and I loved it, 26mpg around town, never downshifted on the big hill climb home, fun zipping in and out of traffic, not much torque…anyway, I have a buddy who will sawp me his B16/J1 setup with a lil cash on my end. So heres where you come in.
I have no desire to be the fastest guy on the street, but I like some poop. Would I be happier with the tourqier LS, and building a head for it? Would a new intake manifold and bigger throttle body make an improvment on my current setup?
The problemis I know I like the B16, and never had any issues with lack of torque really, so which do you think I will prefer for daily driving, mabe an occasional night at the track? Thanks guys…
PS…Is this just a personal preferance issue with no right answer? I searched the threads and didnt really find what I was looking for…thanks again.
It takes quite a bit of time and money to build an LS/VTEC the way it should be built. Any other way usually results in engine trouble.
I don’t think the people in this thread realize that his choices are between keeping his B18A1 (free) or swapping a friend for a B16A (“lil cash on his end”).
It doesn’t look like the OP is trying to spend much money, so advocating a cheap LS/VTEC is just foolish, IMO.
I’d never tell anyone that building an LS-VTEC is cheap or easy, it’s just what I would do. it sounds like the OP has a prefectly good running motor, so I don’t think it’s really worth the time or effort to swap out motors and such. however, I’m not a fan of buying modded cars as I got shafted with a modded civic and my current GS-R. if the B16 is stock, that could be something to look at as well. the B18A may run well now, but you don’t ultimately know the quality of work that was put into the car…
What it all comes down to at the end of the day is what you like. If you like
the b16 then swap motors and if you ever get tired of the b16 you can always get a b18 block and do an ls/vtec.
you can build a LS/VTEC with a b18a1 block and be fine. but building it the right way is some money. yeah you could get the b16 tranny for your ls and it will be a little bit more fun.
I say stay B18a1. You already have it, & have some good mods to boot.
If your intention is to drive everyday, (all over, including highway) just add the intake mani & throttle body. With that setup, a night @ the track is well in sight too. The B16 tranny won’t be good on long drives & highway time. Think 4300rpms @ 80mph in 5th. Constantly.
If you only wanna drive it on weekends & at the track, (straightline) then a B16 tranny on the B18a1 may be the way to go.
And yes, ErMaKsDA9, torque is fun. N/A b18a1 all the way. Do you have dyno/ track numbers? I’m interested to see what my project goals can look like.
