New headgasket boging

Hello to the 2gic community. I just did a headgasket and fired it up, everything seemed great but i gave it some gas and it sounded healthy until i got to about 3k then it cuts out and the tach jumpeds around all wierd(between 0-3k) then idles down. I cant go past 3k soo its not drivable yet and its the same cycle every time i give it gas, its almost like its missing but cutting out too then catching itself when i let off the gas(not like limp mode). The car has been sitting for about a year but didnt have any problems similar to this when it ran last so i suspect i got a vac leak or somthing i missed going on. To my question, has anyone had a vac leak cause somthing similar and if not where do you guys reccomend i go from there? By the way theres no cel. All input helps, thanks!

Quadruple check that the timing belt is correctly set. Then adjust the ignition timing.
Having a vacuum leak shouldn’t cause it to run that bad unless the hoses are really messed up. Then again the distributor might be having its last hurrah.

I had a problem the other day in my Civic. The CEL bulb was burnt out on the dash. Just saying. I didn’t notice it until I hooked up an obd2 scanner. Did you verify that there is not a CEL by looking at the dash or the led on the ECU directly ?

Also, check the ECU fuse under the hood, if that is out it could be in Limp mode

if the ecu fuse goes, you won’t get anything. not even a click of the main relay

any time the tach starts bouncing around is a good sign that the ignigter unit in the distributor is going bad. the rest of you problems seem to stem from what sounds like a bad/going bad distributor aswell.
if your still on the original one, consider looking up distributor king for a replacement cause if one thing in there goes bad, chances are the rest will follow suit shortly there after
